abstract:

line_1: The FOS GTO program includes a systematic study of degenerate stars
line_2: in binary systems, both in the field and in globular clusters, plus a handful
line_3: of related objects. The GTO program for the globular cluster systems
line_4: involves WF/PC or FOC images to locate candidates for cluster X-ray sources
line_5: (selection based on UV-excess in multicolor HST images), followed by confirming
line_6: FOS spectroscopy. Even 1 or 2 new close binaries identified
line_7: through this program will be extremely important, as these
line_8: systems are thought to dominate the kinetic energy budget of
line_9: globular clusters, yet virtually none are currently known.
line_10: This program is for spectroscopic follow-up in NGC6441.

    section: 1
line_1: FOS spectra of a globular cluster X-ray binary counterpart
line_2: will be obtained. Counterpart will be selected from
line_3: Early-acq WFPC images (from another cycle 3 proposal)
line_4: on UV-excess; if no suitable candidate is found, FOS
line_5: in this proposal will not be executed. Early-acq images
line_6: will also be used to select an OFFSET star for FOS TA in
line_7: this proposal. TA of OFFSET star will be followed by blind
line_8: offset to target. Exposure time and position will be updated

line_2: obtained as an early-acq. If identical guide stars happen to be
line_3: available for both observations, FOS acquisition could be
