HEAD ! end of coverpage abstract: line_1: This program involves use of the Wide Field Camera to image NGC 4319 and Mrk 205 line_2: in order to examine the morphology of this association. The purpose is to line_3: attempt to gain more information about the nature of the filamentary material line_4: located between this galaxy-quasar pair. Imaging will be done in two well line_5: calibrated filters, F555W and F785LP, in order to provide a good color line_6: base-line and spatial map of the spectral characteristics of the material line_7: surrounding Mrk 205. These will also be co-added to increase the S/N and line_8: increase the level of detail detected in the structure of the material line_9: surrounding the quasar. The Wide Field Camera has been chosen instead of the line_10: Planetary Camera on the basis of recommendation by image restoration experts line_11: at STScI because, despite its lower spatial resolution, the Wide Field Camera line_12: will offer a greater chance of detecting any bridging material which may be line_13: present due to the fact that there will be more integrated light per pixel line_14: in the WFC than the PC. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: HRICKO fname: KARL title: PI mi: J. inst: CARTERET HIGH SCHOOL country: USA ! lname: THOMAS fname: LEWIS title: CO-I mi: C. inst: UNION COUNTY COLLEGE country: USA ! lname: MITTERANDO fname: JOSEPH title: CO-I mi: M. inst: CARTERET HIGH SCHOOL country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The WFC will be used with filters to examine, in detail, the "connection" line_2: between NGC-4319 and MRK-205. The two filters are F555W, having a center line_3: wave length of 5150 A, and the F785LP. The former has a transmission band line_4: resembling that of the eye, while the latter extends the measurement from line_5: 7750 to 9850A, well into the IR. line_6: The galaxy will be imaged at the center of the WFC Aperture Coordinate line_7: system with the preferred orientation being 90D +/- 15D. This places the line_8: "connection" to MRK-205 exclusivly on the WF2 CCD chip, thereby avoiding the line_9: interfaces between the 4 chips of the WFC. Three alternate orientations place line_10: the "connection" in each of the three remaining chips. Note, however, that all line_11: exposures should be done at the SAME ORIENT in this program. The CCD's will be line_12: pre-flashed before each exposure for maximum sensitivity. Two exposures will line_13: be taken for each filter to minimize cosmic ray effects. line_14: A slight positional offset will also be done between the F555W exposure line_15: and the F785LP useage. This will aid in detecting any artifacts on the CCDs. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Because of the attention directed toward the matter of the NGC4319-MRK205 line_2: association it would be of significant importance to use the unique capability line_3: of the HST to obtain high resolution WFC images of the "bridge-like" feature. line_4: This would provide additonal information as to whether or not this feature may line_5: be a physical connection between this galaxy-quasar pair. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: All exposures in this program should be done within 7 days, and at the line_2: SAME ORIENT. The preferred ORIENT angle is 90D +/- 15D, in order to line_3: place Mrk 205 and the filaments on the best chip, WF2, with three line_4: other acceptable angles being listed as well, specifically ORIENT 0D line_5: +/- 15D, 180D +/- 15D, and 270D +/- 15D. These are intended to place line_6: the quasar image near the middle of the chip and therefore to avoid line_7: having the quasar image placed on the boundary between chips. The line_8: target position defined in the Fixed Target List is near the nucleus line_9: of NGC 4319, and this is placed near the apex of the pyramid by the line_10: use of the POS TARG special requirement, so that if alternate ORIENT line_11: angles are used, the FOV will rotate around the nucleus of NGC 4319 line_12: and place Markarian 205 near the middle of one of the chips. A small line_13: POS TARG offset of 1 arcsec in x and y is also applied between the line_14: F555W and F785LP exposures, in order to aid in identifying any chip line_15: defects. PRE-FLASH=YES is selected in order to increase the sensitivity line_16: of the chips, and CR-SPLIT=0.5 is specified in order to split each exposure line_17: into two exposures each of half the full exposure time duration for that line_18: filter in order to assist with the identification and removal of cosmic line_19: rays during data reduction. line_20: NOTE: The +/- 15D restriction on ORIENT angle is to avoid having a star near line_21: the edge of the field of view being rotated onto the same chip as Mrk 205 line_22: and possibly bleeding across the chip and over the region of interest line_23: between the galaxy nucleus and the quasar. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Data Reduction Includes: line_2: 1) Recalibration after pipeline processing that is done in PODPS. line_3: 2) Co-adding CCD frames in two colors. line_4: 3) Image processing. line_5: It is anticipated that we will return to STScI to make use of line_6: the facilities and expertise in data reduction available there. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: We expect to make use of the resources available at STScI. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: HRICKO fname: KARL mi: J. title: DR. category: PI inst: CARTERET HIGH SCHOOL addr_1: 10 LAMAR AVENUE city: EDISON state: NJ zip: 08820 country: USA phone: 908-494-0948 ! lname: THOMAS fname: LEWIS mi: C. title: DR. category: CoI inst: UNION COUNTY COLLEGE addr_1: 236 WATCHUNG AVENUE city: NORTH PLAINFIELD state: NJ zip: 07060 country: USA phone: 201-292-8466 ! lname: MITTERANDO fname: JOSEPH mi: M. title: MR. category: CoI inst: CARTERET HIGH SCHOOL addr_1: 76 ASH STREET city: CARTERET state: NJ zip: 07008 country: USA phone: 908-969-1739 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: NGC4319-MRK205 descr_1: E,301,313 pos_1: RA = 12H 21M 44.0S +/- 0.3", pos_2: DEC = 75D 19' 20.0" +/- 0.3", pos_3: PLATE-ID = 01G5 equinox: 2000.0 rv_or_z: V=21000 comment_1: RADIAL VELOCITY AND MAGNITUDE comment_2: LISTED ABOVE ARE FOR MRK 205. comment_3: RADIAL VELOCITY IS ~1700 KM/S comment_4: AND V=13 FOR NGC 4319.
