Image the polar aurora on seven line_3: consecutive orbits (6 south, 1 north) to cover one Jupiter rotation, in line_4: early 1994. Starting time with respect to Jupiter's CML will be chosen line_5: to insure overlapping coverage near System III longitude 0 degrees at the line_6: beginning and end of the sequence. Continuum images will also be taken line_7: for limb-fitting to find the planet center accurately. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: CALDWELL fname: JOHN mi: J. inst: YORK UNIVERSITY country: CANADA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: S/N estimate based on previous HST images, with FOC pixel binning to 2x2 line_2: (arcsec)^2 assumed. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: If this supplementary proposal is executed, it will probably be early line_2: in 1994. Some details concerning small angle slews following safety line_3: checks will change, by a few arc seconds, when the execution period is line_4: known to within a few weeks. The sequence of consecutive orbits will line_5: start and end when the CML (III) is about 0 deg. In the middle, when line_6: the CML is about 180 deg, there will be a one-orbit excursion from line_7: the south to the north pole, and back. Continuum images for planetary line_8: navigation will be obtained. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Images will be calibrated and binned as necessary to produce optimum line_2: information. Exposures are limited not only by photons but also by planetary line_3: rotation, so that standard S/N estimates are not meaningful. Previous line_4: experience with HST/FOC images of the Jovian aurora shows that the chosen line_5: exposure times will produce excellent images. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Auroral imaging of the polar regions of Jupiter will be performed with the line_2: FOC, using filters F175W and F152M in series, to reduce red leak and provide line_3: reasonable sensitivity to H2 emission at 1600 A. Continuum images at 2200A line_4: will also be obtained. Exposure times and the total number of exposures, line_7: being constrained by HST efficiency and orbital considerations and by Jovian line_8: rotation, cannot change. If the auroral images are obtained without breaking line_9: GS lock, a second set of continuum images at the end of the auroral sequence line_10: will be omitted, and an additional auroral orbit will be added. This is line_12: handled by a COND IF ... REQ in the exposure list. The program includes the line_13: FOC bright object observing procedure. Dark exposures are added before each line_14: new filter combination, to be executed during Earth occultation, immediately line_15: before the associated science exposures. The visibility period following a line_16: DARK should start with a full GS ACQ to undo the effects of preceding SIPS. line_17: A pointed uplink should follow the GS ACQ. If telemetry indicates the proper line_18: filters are in place, a precalculated SIP (based on the actual S/C roll angle) line_19: will be made, and observations will continue. Contact Alex Storrs (SPB, x4903) line_20: for details. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: CALDWELL fname: JOHN mi: J. title: DR. category: PI inst: YORK UNIVERSITY addr_1: PHYSICS DEPT addr_2: 4700 KEELE ST. city: NORTH YORK state: ON zip: M3J 1P3 country: CANADA ! ! end of general_form_address records !
