The jet has been studied in x-rays with Einstein and ROSAT, line_3: and has been shown to have sub-arcsecond structure in the radio. Ground- line_4: based optical observations of the inner jet region have been inconclusive. line_5: We propose to observe the inner jet in the UV using the FOC. We will also line_6: use the WFC with its polarizers to observe the same region, to determine line_7: intrinsic polarization and to help study those structures which lie line_8: behind the dust lane. We will measure the spectrum of the jet and its line_9: sub-structure as a function of position, from radio through optical and UV line_10: to the x-ray, determine the existence of any spectral break, and, in line_11: general, check the correctness of the synchrotron hypothesis. We may also line_12: be able to determine the location of electron acceleration regions. If line_13: 0.1 arcsec optical structure exists, we will also establish the basis for line_14: proper motion and synchrotron decay lifetime studies. We will also use line_15: the FOC to study a bright knot of x-ray emission seen in a ridge parallel line_16: to but outside the dust lane, pursuing the hypothesis that emission is line_17: coming from massive binaries in a region of star formation. During the line_18: primary observations, we propose parallel observations in the halo, to help line_19: interpret the diffuse x-ray emission, identify sources observed with ROSAT, line_20: and extend the mapping of globular clusters in NGC 5128. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: SCHREIER fname: ETHAN title: PI mi: J. inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: FORD fname: HOLLAND inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: MACCHETTO fname: F. mi: D. inst: STSCI country: USA esa: Y ! lname: SPARKS fname: WILLIAM inst: STSCI country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We are using the FOC/f96 camera to observe 4 points in the jet of CenA, line_2: and a hotspot in an x-ray ridge. Two exposures are done at each of the line_3: five FOC pointings, one with F320W and one with F175W. In addition, we line_4: are using the WFC with polarizers and the F675W filter to observe the line_5: jet, with a short WFC exposure without the polarizers for reference. line_6: During the FOC observations, we are using the WFC to do parallel line_7: observations in the halo, to search for globular clusters. The parallel line_8: WFC exposures are done with two filters -- F785LP and F555W -- at each line_9: pointing, to obtain rough colors. During the prime WFC observations, line_10: we also do parallel FOC observations, using F320W and F175W. line_11: We have planned the observations so that the time at each FOC pointing line_12: is split equally between each of the two filters. For convenience, we line_13: have split the parallel WFC exposure time between the two filters at the line_14: same boundaries. This is not essential. line_15: One hour FOC exposures are planned with each filter at each of the two line_16: inner jet positions, 40 minute FOC exposures with each filter at the two line_17: outer jet positions and 30 minutes each at the ridge hotspot. We use line_18: five 20 minute exposures (total 100 minutes) with each of the three line_19: polarizers with the WFC, and two 10 minute exposures without the line_20: polarizers. As a result, we do not want the default CR-split for these. line_21: However, the parallel WFC exposures do assume the default CR-split. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: We require the 4 WFC oservations of the jet to be performed together line_2: (e.g. GROUP NO GAP) to ensure no significant change in orientation of line_3: the field. line_4: We also note that 3 targets (CENA-NUC, CENA-KNOTA, CENA-RIDGE) use the line_5: same instrument/configuration (FOC/f96) and are all within one arcminute, line_6: as are 2 other targets (CENA-KNOTES, CENA-KNOTEH), allowing savings on line_7: guide star acquisition times. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: There are no special FOC calibration requirements. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: There are no special data analysis requirements. ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: There is no previous HST data on CenA. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: Schreier fname: Ethan mi: J. category: PI inst: STScI addr_1: 3700 San Martin Drive city: Baltimore state: Md zip: 21218 country: USA phone: (410) 338-4740 telex: (410) 338-2519 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: CENA-KNOTA name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: XI-OFF = 13" +/- 1", pos_2: ETA-OFF = 10" +/- 1", pos_3: FROM 6 equinox: 1950 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 2 name_1: CENA-KNOTES name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: XI-OFF = 111" +/- 1", pos_2: ETA-OFF = 70" +/- 1", pos_3: FROM 6 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 3 name_1: CENA-KNOTEH name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: XI-OFF = 93" +/- 1", pos_2: ETA-OFF = 62" +/- 1", pos_3: FROM 6 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 4 name_1: CENA-RIDGE name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,909,915 pos_1: XI-OFF = -7" +/- 1", pos_2: ETA-OFF = -52" +/- 1", pos_3: FROM 6 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 5 name_1: CENA-KNOTAB name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: XI-OFF = 20" +/- 1", pos_2: ETA-OFF = 12" +/- 1", pos_3: FROM 6 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 6 name_1: CENA-NUC name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: RA = 13H 22M 31.60S +/- 0.01S, pos_2: DEC = -42D 45' 34.5" +/- 0.1" equinox: 1950 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 7 name_1: CENA-PAR1 name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: RA = 13H 22M 31.6S, pos_2: DEC = -42D 45' 34.5", pos_3: REGION, pos_4: R = 15' equinox: 1950 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 8 name_1: CENA-PAR2 name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: RA = 13H 22M 31.6S, pos_2: DEC = -42D 45' 34.5", pos_3: REGION, pos_4: R = 15' equinox: 1950 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 9 name_1: CENA-PAR3 name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: RA = 13H 22M 31.6S, pos_2: DEC = -42D 45' 34.5", pos_3: REGION, pos_4: R = 15' equinox: 1950 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 10 name_1: CENA-PAR4 name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: RA = 13H 22M 31.6S, pos_2: DEC = -42D 45' 34.5", pos_3: REGION, pos_4: R = 15' equinox: 1950 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 11 name_1: CENA-PAR5 name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: RA = 13H 22M 31.6S, pos_2: DEC = -42D 45' 34.5", pos_3: REGION, pos_4: R = 15' equinox: 1950 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 12 name_1: CENA-PAR6 name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: RA = 13H 22M 31.6S, pos_2: DEC = -42D 45' 34.5", pos_3: REGION, pos_4: R = 15' equinox: 1950 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 13 name_1: CENA-PAR7 name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: RA = 13H 22M 31.6S, pos_2: DEC = -42D 45' 34.5", pos_3: REGION, pos_4: R = 15' equinox: 1950 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 14 name_1: CENA-PAR8 name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: RA = 13H 22M 31.6S, pos_2: DEC = -42D 45' 34.5", pos_3: REGION, pos_4: R = 15' equinox: 1950 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! targnum: 15 name_1: CENA-PAR9 name_2: NGC5128 descr_1: E,315,907 pos_1: RA = 13H 22M 31.6S, pos_2: DEC = -42D 45' 34.5", pos_3: REGION, pos_4: R = 15' equinox: 1950 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21+/-1 ! ! end of fixed targets !
