Knowledge of the size line_3: and composition of the dust grains is fundamental to the understanding of the line_4: formation, evolution, and lifetime of the protoplanetary disk. Despite many IR line_5: and optical observations of the disk, the size and composition of the grain line_6: population(s) in the disk remains a subject of controversy. We propose to use line_7: the unique capabilities of HST to conduct spectrophotometric observations of the line_8: disk 4 arcsec from B Pic. Most of the currently proposed grain compositions line_9: have strongly discriminating UV spectral features, such as absorption bands or line_10: cutoffs, which are suitable for a diagnostic study of the grain composition. line_11: By comparing the HST spectra with published laboratory reflectance spectra and line_12: with synthetic reflectance spectra modelled for different grain properties and line_13: sizes using Mie scattering theory, we may better constrain the grain properties line_14: and refine the current disk models which seek to unify the optical and IR line_15: observations of the disk. The HST spectra may also show spectral-line evidence line_16: of diatomic species common in comets, which are thought to be the cause of the line_17: time-varying absorption line features observed in optical and UV spectra of line_18: B Pic itself. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: CLAMPIN fname: MARK title: PI inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: PARESCE fname: FRANCESCO inst: STSCI country: USA esa: Y ! lname: GOLIMOWSKI fname: DAVID mi: A inst: JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Description of the observations: the three stage acquisition of line_2: Beta Pic will be conducted using the blue digicon and the high line_3: dispersion G130H grating. We will obtain a 1 minute exposure of line_4: Beta Pictoris itself, and offset the telescope 4 arcsec SW to a line_5: location coincident with the midplane of that extension of the line_6: disk. A second line_7: offset will then be performed to a location 8 arcsec SW of Beta line_8: Pictoris, once again coincident with the midplane of that line_9: extension of the disk. A third offset will then be performed to line_10: a location 4 arcsec SE of Beta Pic and 90 degrees from the plane line_11: of the disk. No circumstellar dust is seen perpendicular to the line_12: plane of the disk, so any emission at this location should be line_13: attributed to the stellar PSF. These exposures will establish both line_14: the nature of the stellar UV spectrum and the contribution of line_15: the PSF to the disk spectra. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: CLAMPIN fname: MARK category: PI inst: STScI addr_1: SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE addr_2: 3700 SAN MARTIN DRIVE city: BALTIMORE state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA phone: 410-338-4711 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: HD39060 name_2: BETA-PIC descr_1: A,124 pos_1: RA = 05H 47M 17.1S +/- 0.1", pos_2: DEC = -51D 03' 59" +/- 0.1" equinox: 2000 pos_epoch_yr: 2000.00 comment_1: FOR ACQUISITION PLUS G130H EXPOSURE fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=3.85,TYPE=A5V fluxnum_2: 1 fluxval_2: B-V = +0.17 fluxnum_3: 2 fluxval_3: E(B-V)= 0.0 ! targnum: 2 name_1: HD39060-OFFSET1 name_2: BETA-PIC-DISK1 descr_1: A,904 pos_1: R = 4", pos_2: PA = 210D, pos_3: FROM 1 comment_1: OFFSET TO CIRCUMSTELLAR DISK comment_2: SPECTROPHOTOMETRY OF DISK fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)= 14.1 +/- 0.2 fluxnum_2: 1 fluxval_2: B-V=0.2 fluxnum_3: 2 fluxval_3: E(B-V)= 0.0 ! targnum: 3 name_1: HD39060-OFFSET2 name_2: BETA-PIC-DISK2 descr_1: A,904 pos_1: R = 8", pos_2: PA = 210D, pos_3: FROM 1 comment_1: OFFSET TO CIRCUMSTELLAR DISK comment_2: SPECTROPHOTOMETRY OF DISK fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)= 15.9 +/- 0.2 fluxnum_2: 1 fluxval_2: B-V=0.2 fluxnum_3: 2 fluxval_3: E(B-V)= 0.0 ! targnum: 4 name_1: HD39060-OFFSET3 name_2: BETA-PIC-SKY descr_1: A,904 pos_1: R = 4", pos_2: PA = 120D, pos_3: FROM 1 comment_1: OFFSET FROM STAR TO SKY comment_2: SPECTROPHOTOMETRY OF PSF fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)= 18 +/- 1 fluxnum_2: 1 fluxval_2: B-V=0.2 fluxnum_3: 2 fluxval_3: E(B-V)= 0.0 ! ! end of fixed targets !
