These data will provide line_3: qualitatively new insights into the radio galaxy phenomenon. They line_4: will: 1) Test the currently-fashionable 'unification schemes' for line_5: AGNs, by searching for light from a 'buried' quasar that has been line_6: scattered into our line-of-sight by dust or warm electrons in the line_7: radio galaxy's ISM 2) Probe the 'starburst-AGN-connection' and its line_8: role in fueling radio galaxies, by determining the structure and line_9: morphology of the regions of star-formation that have been glimpsed line_10: in existing ground-based optical images of some radio galaxies, and line_11: 3) Provide a local laboratory in which the mysterious 'alignment line_12: effect' that dominates the UV properties of high-redshift radio line_13: galaxies can be studied. Archival IUE spectra of our sample line_14: galaxies demonstrate that UV light will be detectable with HST. The line_15: UV imaging capabilities of HST are required for this project line_16: because scattered AGN light and light from young stars are both so line_17: blue that they would have at least a 30-times-better contrast line_18: against the old underlying stellar population at 2000A than at line_19: 3500A. The high angular resolution of HST is required for both the line_20: detection of this light and for the delineation of its structure. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: HECKMAN fname: TIMOTHY title: PI mi: M. inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: BAUM fname: STEFI mi: A. inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: LOWENTHAL fname: JAMES inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: MILEY fname: GEORGE mi: K. inst: LEIDEN OBSERVATORY country: NETHERLANDS esa: Y ! lname: SMITH fname: ERIC mi: P. inst: NASA GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We plan to obtain images of each of the five radio galaxies with line_2: the FOC in f/96, configured as a 512x512 pixel (11 x 11 arcsec) line_3: array (unzoomed). For each galaxy, we will obtain four exposures line_4: through the F210M filter, each having an exposure time of 1000sec. line_5: These four exposures will be added together, and since we do not line_6: know a priori that any single exposure will have a point source line_7: bright enough to use to align and coregister the four frames, we line_8: will need the four exposures to be taken at the same position and line_9: with the same orientation. For each galaxy we will also obtain a line_10: single exposure of 800sec duration through the F470M filter. This line_11: image will be used in conjunction with the corresponding F210M line_12: image set to contruct a color map of the galaxy. It is therefore line_13: important that this image be taken in the same position and line_14: orientation as the set of F210M images. Since we plan to restore line_15: these images (if a source of adequate surface brightness is line_16: detected), we require fine-lock to insure the highest quality line_17: Point-Spread-Function. line_18: Because we shall be coadding the multiple images, it is desirable line_19: that the exposures be obtained in a contiguous fashion. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: See question 3 above. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: HECKMAN fname: TIMOTHY mi: M. title: DR. category: PI inst: STSCI addr_1: 3700 SAN MARTIN DRIVE, city: BALTIMORE state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA phone: 410-338-4700 from_date: 21-MAR-88 to_date: 21-MAR-99 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: 3C33 descr_1: E,315 pos_1: RA= 01H 8M 52.83S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +13D 20' 14.4" +/- 1.0", pos_3: PLATE-ID=00GR equinox: 2000 rv_or_z: Z=0.06 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=15.3 ! targnum: 2 name_1: 3C305 descr_1: E,315 pos_1: RA= 14H 49M 21.53S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +63D 16' 13.9" +/- 1.0", pos_3: PLATE-ID=00A9 equinox: 2000 rv_or_z: Z=0.042 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=13.8 ! targnum: 3 name_1: PKS2152-699 descr_1: E,315 pos_1: RA= 21H 57M 06.02S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC= -69D 41' 23.3" +/- 1.0", pos_3: PLATE-ID=017B equinox: 2000 rv_or_z: Z=0.028 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=13.7 ! targnum: 4 name_1: PKS2322-122 descr_1: E,315 pos_1: RA= 23H 25M 19.67S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC= -12D 07' 27.4" +/- 1.0", pos_3: PLATE-ID=00WQ equinox: 2000 rv_or_z: Z=0.082 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=15.1 ! targnum: 5 name_1: 3C192 descr_1: E,315 pos_1: RA= 08H 05M 35.01S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +24D 09' 50.1" +/- 1.0", pos_3: PLATE-ID=02UF equinox: 2000 rv_or_z: Z=0.060 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=15.7 ! ! end of fixed targets !
