abstract:

    line_1:        We propose to use the Planetary Camera to search for young and
    line_2:        intermediate-age globular clusters in NGC 3610. High resolution and
    line_3:        relatively high S/N images in three passbands (approximately B, V, and
    line_4:        R) will be used to study the spatial, size, luminosity, and color
    line_5:        distributions of candidate globular clusters in these three galaxies.
    line_6:        When combined with our Cycle 2 observations of one ongoing merger (NGC
    line_7:        4038/4039 = "The Antennae") and one 0.5-1 Gyr old merger remnant (NGC
    line_8:        7252), this sample should allow us to estimate the fraction of young
    line_9:        globular clusters formed in major mergers relative to the older,
    line_10:       premerger population of globular clusters.

    line_1:        The Wide-Field Camera (WFC) will be used to obtain exposures with
    line_2:        F555W (13 m), and F785LP (13 m).  Since cr-split
    line_3:        will be employed, this will result in a total of 4 subexposures.
    line_4:        These will be centered on WF2, the default chip.
    line_6:        The PC will be used to obtain exposures  with F555W (50 m),
    line_7:        F555W (50 m), and F 785LP (40 m) to maximize the spatial resolution
    line_8:        for the central region. The galaxy will be centered on P6.
    line_9:        Short exposure (140 s) with no cr-split will also be taken to
    line_10:       make sure the center of the galaxy is not saturated.
    line_12:       The main goal is to search for globular clusterss, determine
    line_13:       their luminosities, colors, sizes, and shapes.
