For line_4: several we observe a typical QSO spectrum in polarized light suggesting the line_5: axisymmetric geometry proposed for lower luminosity AGN like NGC 1068. We line_6: propose to use spectropolarimetry with the FOS line_7: to investigate the nature of the polarization in this UNIQUE sample of highly line_8: polarized IRAS-selected IR-ultraluminous AGN, and thereby constrain the nuclear line_9: geometry and investigate the `hidden QSO' hypothesis. HST will provide the wide line_10: wavelength coverage needed to discriminate among different polarization line_11: mechanisms, and extend our ground-based spectropolarimetry to ~1650 A. Imaging line_12: will help constrain the geometry of the scatterers, which is important for line_13: detailed investigation of their properties. Better understanding of selection line_14: biases caused by dust will be important in understanding the space density and line_15: evolution of AGN. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WILLS fname: BEVERLEY title: PI mi: J inst: UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS country: USA ! lname: HINES fname: DEAN mi: C inst: UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS country: USA ! lname: SITKO fname: MICHAEL mi: L inst: UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI country: USA ! lname: GOODRICH fname: ROBERT mi: W inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block !
