It line_3: presents a unique opportunity for direct determination of the mass of line_4: a white dwarf, except that it is impossible to obtain the velocity line_5: curve of the white dwarf from the ground because its light is swamped line_6: by that of the K dwarf. We propose to determine its velocity curve line_7: using the GHRS at Lyman-alpha, where the white dwarf has a strong line_8: absorption feature, and thus obtain only the fourth fundamentally line_9: determined mass of a white dwarf. As bonuses, our observations will line_10: also: (1) provide constraints on the presence of photospheric metals line_11: accreted at the white dwarf's magnetic poles from the K2 V star's line_12: wind; (2) allow us to search for modulation of metal lines at the line_13: 9.25-min rotation period of the white dwarf, which is expected if the line_14: metals are concentrated at the magnetic poles; (3) measure the line_15: gravitational redshift of the white dwarf; and (4) stringently line_16: constrain the magnetic field strength of the white dwarf by the line_17: presence or absence of Zeeman components of Lyman-alpha. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BOND fname: HOWARD title: PI mi: E. inst: STSCI country: USA ! lname: SION fname: EDWARD mi: M. inst: VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY country: USA ! lname: STAUFFER fname: JOHN mi: R. inst: CENTER FOR ASTROPHYSICS country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 2 section: 1 line_1: (See original proposal for Scientific Justification) ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: V471 Tau is an eclipsing binary containing a white dwarf (WD) and K line_2: dwarf (dK), with an orbital period of 12.5 hours. The WD is also known line_3: to rotate with a period of 9.25 minutes. line_4: In order to determine the RV amplitude of the WD component of V471 line_5: Tau, we will obtain two GHRS spectra each at orbital phases 0.25 and line_6: 0.75, centered at Lyman-alpha. Each of the total of four observations line_7: will have a duration of four WD rotation periods, i.e. 37 minutes. line_8: Each of the 37-min runs will be broken into 16 individual spectra, line_9: i.e., four spectra per WD rotation. Due to deadtime between GHRS line_10: exposures, each individual exposure will be 1.92 min. line_11: The observing sequence (for each of the 4 independent observations) line_12: is: (1) acquire target in LSA; (2) acquire/peakup in SSA; (3) line_13: wavelength calibration (with no further carousel motions during the line_14: sequence); (4) the 16 science observations covering 37 min; (5) a line_15: final wavelength calibration. line_16: Note that deadtime between exposures is assumed to be 20 sec. The line_17: exposure time for each of the 16 spectra is thus 8 times 14.4 sec, line_18: which is the step-time for our chosen step-patt and comb, or 115.2 line_19: seconds. line_20: DARK TIME is requested to reduce the intensity of geocoronal line_21: Lyman-alpha but is not absolutely necessary. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: (See original proposal) ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: We will obtain wavelength calibrations before and after each of the line_2: four GHRS observations. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: (see original proposal) ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: (see original proposal) ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: (See original proposal) ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: (See original proposal) ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: BOND fname: HOWARD mi: E. category: PI inst: STScI addr_1: 3700 SAN MARTIN DR. city: BALTIMORE state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA phone: 410-338-4718 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: V471-TAU name_2: BD+16D516 name_3: GSC1252-212 descr_1: A,120,139,161 pos_1: PLATE-ID=00FH, pos_2: RA = 03H 50M 24.85S +/- 0.7", pos_3: DEC = +17D 14' 47.7" +/- 0.7" equinox: J2000 pm_or_par: Y pos_epoch_yr: 1993.00 ra_pm_val: 0.000412 dec_pm_val: -0.0140 comment_1: FOR R.A.
