The aim is to search for close, resolved binary line_3: companions, which can be used to determine distances to the nebulae line_4: through photometric parallaxes. We argue that about 10 percent of the line_5: central stars will have visual companions that will be detectable at line_6: HST resolution. The images will be obtained in the Planetary Camera I line_7: band (F785LP), with exposure times of a few seconds up to about 30 line_8: minutes. We show that close companions as much as 5-6 mag fainter in line_9: the I band than the central stars are detectable with HST. line_11: The ultimate aim of the program is to provide a group of objects that line_12: can be used to determine accurate photometric distances to planetary line_13: nebulae, thus greatly improving the presently unsatisfactory state of line_14: the Galactic planetary-nebula distance scale.
