abstract:

    line_1:        FOS UV spectra will be used to probe the effect of ionizing radiation from the
    line_2:        compact star on the atmosphere of the normal companion, gaining information on
    line_3:        the unobservable soft X-ray spectrum of the system which may, in some cases,
    line_4:        dominate the energy budget. The FOS time resolved mode permits data also to be
    line_5:        obtained as a function of pulse phase for X-ray pulsars, especially in the UV,
    line_6:        where the strong resonance lines are available.
