Oort Cloud objects line_4: are believed to be rich in frozen volatiles (chiefly water) and organic line_5: molecules. The energetic flux of a bright nova may trigger significant line_6: activity from a large fraction of an Oort Cloud's population. The HST's unique line_7: ability to obtain high-resolution filtered images in the ultraviolet is line_8: critical to this proposal, since the OH (3085 A and 2820 A bands) line_9: products of water evaporation and dissociation processes in a remote line_10: Oort Cloud are potentially observable using the Wide Field line_11: Camera. Detection of an Oort Cloud would be a substantial result. Images line_12: obtained at two epochs (70 and 180 days from maximum luminosity) will be used to line_13: search for evidence of an Oort Cloud and may reveal information about the line_14: composition, total mass, and spatial distribution of material in the cloud. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: HEWITT fname: T. title: MR. mi: J. inst: AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS WORKING GROUP country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Approximately 70 days after the nova's maximum luminosity, an Epoch 1 line_2: image (Exposure 1) was obtained. line_4: In this proposal, we will revisit the nova region. line_6: All exposures will be made with filter F284W, to take advantage of the OH line_7: bands at 3085 A and 2820 A. The observations have been split into three line_8: groups of exposures: line_10: Group 1 is 2 short exposures. These should be short enough to ensure that line_11: the nova will not saturate line_12: the chip but long enough to get the best signal to noise possible. line_14: Group 2 are a couple of medium length exposures. These will show more line_15: detail of the surrounding region line_16: however the nova will saturate and possibly bleed across the chip. line_18: Group 3 are a series of long exposures. Here we hope to pull out the more line_19: faint details in the background line_20: but we expect the nova to be highly saturated. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: Exposure times are our best estimate. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: This Observation should be scheduled at roughly 180 days of nova's peak line_2: brillancy line_3: for comparison with emission features detected in epoch 1. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Data reduction and analysis will make use of the facilities offered by STScI line_2: and available at UC, Berekeley. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: HEWITT fname: T. mi: J. category: PI inst: AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS WORKING GROUP addr_1: 418 BOYNTON AVE. city: BERKELEY state: CA zip: 94707 country: USA phone: (415) 525-5096 from_date: 10-OCT-89 to_date: 10-OCT-99 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: NOVA-CYGNI-1992 descr_1: A,150, G,512 pos_1: RA = 20H 30M 31.626S +/- 1", pos_2: DEC = 52D 37' 51.88" +/- 1", pos_3: PLATE-ID=003I equinox: J2000 pm_or_par: NO comment_1: V=17 IS OF PROGENITOR STAR. comment_2: ANTICIPATE NOVA TO BE AT U=9 OR comment_3: FAINTER AT TIME OF OBSERVATION. fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=17 ! ! end of fixed targets !
