In the chosen redshift range, these images line_4: will have a resolution of 15 to 60 pc and will cover the inner 500 to 800 pc line_5: near the nucleus. The F785LP band-pass will image the stellar continuum in a line_6: region with little internal absorption and will be free of atmospheric OH line_7: emission. We will use these images to analyze the morphology and to measure the line_8: stellar nuclear luminosity function for this matched sample of active galaxies. line_9: Comparing these with similar data for "normal" galaxies from the HST archives line_10: will allow us to search for any features which differentiate the host galaxies line_11: Seyferts from those of normal galaxies and may help identify the large-scale line_12: mechanisms responsible for replenishing the material which gives rise to the line_13: Seyfert phenomenn. This sample is defined in MacKenty 1989 (Ap.J. 343, 125) line_4: and the Seyfert fraction has been imaged from Mauna Kea in B, V, and line_5: R (MacKenty 1990, Ap.J. Suppl. 72, 231). The Seyfert sample contains line_6: all known (as of 1983) Markarian Seyferts with recess- ion velocities line_7: between 3000 and 13000 km/s, M(pg) < -19 (Ho=75), m(pg) < 16.5, and line_8: declinations between -20 and +60 degrees. (It includes 7 bright NGC line_9: galaxies which have apparent magnitudes less than the Markarian line_10: survey's limit.) This is as close to a complete sample of luminous line_11: Seyfert galaxies as can be constructed while maintaining a line_12: sufficiently large number of galaxies to properly represent this line_13: diverse population. The Seyfert galaxy Markarian 486 has been omitted line_14: since it duplicates an observation in program GTO 3185. line_15: Each observation will require between 120 and 260 seconds in the line_16: F785LP filter on Course Track pointing control (as recommended by TAC). line_17: If Gyro Hold pointing control must be used, exposure time should be line_18: reduced to 120 seconds for all such observations and the PI line_19: consulted. With a stability of 1 milliarcsecs/second, this will line_20: barely elongate the well sampled PC point spread function at 8000A. line_21: These frames should provide numerous SNAPSHOT mode opportunities for line_22: the STScI scheduling system. To do line_3: this one must include galaxies with redshifts beyond the range where line_4: ground-based telescopes can resolve the 50 - 100 pc scale features line_5: that are our primary target. Only HST can provide the necessary resolution. line_6: In addition, the 0.8 to 1.0 micron region is the most accessible, line_7: broad band-pass where objects at this redshift have spectra free of line_8: strong emission lines and relatively free of internal absorption. This line_9: is best measured outside the earth's atmosphere to avoid OH emission. line_10: Two scientific motivations lead us to propose a snapshot survey of line_11: 100 galaxies rather than a set of pointed observations on a smaller line_12: sample. Both of these are directly related to the need for a line_13: representative sample of objects. First, the known distribution of line_14: morphologies in Seyfert and starburst galaxies is rather broad and we line_15: are searching for correlations with several parameters (e.g. type of line_16: nuclear activity, large scale morphology, local galaxy density). line_17: Thus it is problematic to define a representative sample of a small line_18: number of galaxies. Second, the time scale for the final stages of a line_19: galaxy merger (when the two nuclei are within 1 kpc or less) is very line_20: short. If the Seyfert phenomena lasts for as long as 1 Gyr and the line_21: end stages of a merger can occur on an orbital timescale of only a line_22: few 10s of Myr, then we would expect to see only a few such cases in line_23: a sample of 100 galaxies. ! question: 7 section: 0 line_1: Following the routine pipeline processing the observations of each line_2: galaxy will be hand edited to remove cosmic ray tracks.
