PLANETARY SCI. ! end of coverpage abstract: line_1: Much of the scientific utility of narrow band imaging of nebulae lies in line_2: the study of stratification and structural variations among emission line_3: lines that trace regions of different density, temperature, and line_4: radiation environment. As such, imaging studies of nebulae are not line_5: as seriously affected by HST's optical problems as many programs, line_6: so long as adequate signal to noise is obtained to allow reliable line_7: deconvolution of the structure present. For nearby objects, HST can line_8: resolve physically important scales associated with many gasdynamic and line_9: radiative processes in the ISM. In this section of the WFPC HII line_10: proposal, we request time augment our study of the 30 Doradus region line_11: by investigating the structure of the ionized gas. This investigation line_18: will help us understand the structure and physics of H II line_19: regions and the ISM in external galaxies. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: In 30 Doradus Halpha, [SII], and F702W WFC images will be line_2: obtained of a piece of the nebula to the north of the core line_3: of massive stars, R136. The position is chosen to capture line_4: the cluster at an edge of the field of view and extend into line_5: a region where the velocity structure of the ionized gas line_6: has been measured. The F702W image will be used to subtract line_7: the continuum from the emission images. A PSF star will also line_8: be observed in each filter for deconvolution purposes. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: HST is required for this project for its ability to obtain very line_2: high resolution images over a morderately large field. In line_3: 30 Doradus extensive emission-line data have been obtained line_4: from the ground, but high-resolution images obtained with line_5: HST will allow an examination of the details of the interaction line_6: of the stars with the gas. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Images will be processed to largely remove CCD characteristics line_2: using the best calibration data available at that time. Cosmic line_3: rays will be removed using CRSPLIT images. Frames will be line_4: processed to partially correct for spherical aberration using line_5: a modified version of Lucy deconvolution. Our experience to line_6: date suggests that a relatively modest deconvolution gives the line_7: best signal to noise in the features of interest. Images taken line_8: through different filters will be aligned with each other and line_9: with ground-based data using measured positions of stars. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: HUNTER fname: DEIDRE mi: A. category: CON inst: LOWELL OBSERVATORY addr_1: 1400 W.
