PLANETARY SCI. ! end of coverpage abstract: line_1: A population of bright, blue objects around NGC 1275 was line_2: detected in an initial PC exposure. These my be luminous line_3: globular clusters at an early stage of evolution. Deeper line_4: exposures will be used to probe the luminosity function of line_5: the objects, and to improve measurements of brightnesses line_6: and colors. A medium band picture will confirm that the line_7: objects are not emission line sources. Short exposures line_8: will be obtained to study the galaxy nucleus. PSF line_9: observations will be made to get better photometry, line_10: to check if the objects are spatially resolved, and to line_11: allow deconvolotuion of the structure in the underlying line_12: galaxy light. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We propose to obtain 5400s of exposures in F555W and F702W line_2: to get more accurate photometry of the star clusters and to line_3: probe the luminosity function. In addition, we propose to line_4: obtain 5400s of exposure in F336W to study the massive star line_5: content of the clusters. line_6: To confirm that the objects are continuum sources, we will line_7: take a 5400s exposure in F547M. A 5400s exposure should line_8: go about as deep as the original F555W exposure, thus line_9: enabling us to confirm that the objects detected line_10: are continuum sources. line_11: Finally, we propose to obtain several short exposures in line_12: F555W, F702W, and F336W which will allow us to observe the line_13: galaxy nucleus without saturation. These will be used to line_14: help deconvolve the galaxy light profile. To support this line_15: effort, we also want to obtain PSF observations of a line_16: nearby bright star. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: NGC 1275 has been observed extensively from the ground. No line_2: ground-based observations were able to detect the point-like line_3: sources which are easily visible in our PC pictures. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: We plan to reduce these observations in a similar fashion to line_2: previous galaxy images we have obtained. We will do aperture line_3: photometry of the point-like objects. With PSF observations, line_4: which were unavailable for the first set of observations line_5: because of a failed acquisition, we should also be able to do line_6: PSF fitting photometry. This will allow us to better line_7: determine whether the objects are spatially resolved. line_8: PSF observations will also be used to subtract the nuclear line_9: point source from the galaxy and deconvolve the underlying line_10: galaxy image. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: We request that the PSF observations be obtained as close as line_2: possible to the galaxy observations. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: HOLTZMAN fname: JON mi: A. category: CON inst: LOWELL OBSERVATORY addr_1: MARS HILL ROAD city: FLAGSTAFF state: AZ zip: 86001 country: USA phone: (602) 774-3358 ! lname: FABER fname: SANDRA mi: M. category: CON inst: UCO/LICK OBSERVATORY addr_1: UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SANTA CRUZ city: SANTA CRUZ state: CA zip: 95064 country: USA phone: (408) 459-2944 ! lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. title: PROF. category: PI inst: CALTECH addr_1: M/S 170-25 addr_2: DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL addr_3: & PLANETARY SCIENCES city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA phone: (818) 356-4900 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: NGC1275 descr_1: E,303,315,320 pos_1: RA= 3H 16M29.5S +/-0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +41D 19' 48" +/-1" equinox: 1950 ! targnum: 2 name_1: SAO38695 descr_1: A,138 pos_1: RA= 3H 13M 29.6S +/-0.1S, pos_2: DEC= +42D 18' 48" +/-0.1" equinox: 1950 ! ! end of fixed targets !
