Two line_4: additional points at +/-1.0" will be obtained using the 0.5" aperture. line_5: All these major axis positions have been moved from the FOS/GTO line_6: baseline program into this augmented time proposal to unify the target line_7: acquisition and ensure that all positions in the nuclear region are line_8: registered at precisely known positions. Along the minor axis (Position line_9: angle 135 deg) we will obtain spectra at +/-0.25", +-0.50", and line_10: +/-0.75" using grating G570H and the 0.3" aperture. Additional line_11: spectra at 8 off-axis points parallel to and on either side of the line_12: major axis ((+/-0.25", +/-0.25") and (+/-0.25", +/-0.5")) using the line_13: same grating/aperture combination will also be obtained. line_14: Acquisition will be done using a binary search on a nearby star line_15: identified in a WFC image, followed by two small peak-ups on the line_16: brightest peak in the nucleus of NGC 224. Since the selected line_17: star is not in the same WFC CCD frame as the nucleus of NGC 224, line_18: we will update the coordinates in the proposal once the geometric line_19: calibration of mosaic WFC frames is complete. For use as a line_20: template star in Fourier quotient deconvolutions, we will obtain a line_21: spectrum of the K star F193 using the same grating and aperture. line_22: Internal wavelength calibrations will be obtained through the same line_23: grating and aperture on each of the M31 exposures and on F193. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: NGC 224 (M31) has been observed extensively from the ground line_2: both photometrically and spectroscopically. In addition, the nucleus line_3: of NGC 224 has been imaged from the balloon-borne Stratoscope line_4: telescope. Despite the spherical aberration of the HST primary, our line_5: Cycle 0 images resolve more structure in the nucleus of M31 than is line_6: even apparent from the Stratoscope images; structure that can be line_7: resolved with no correction for spherical aberration should yield line_8: unconfused dynamical measurements that are impossible to obtain from line_9: the ground in even the best seeing. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: The observations of the nuclear region of NGC 224 (M31) are arranged line_2: on a finely spaced (0.25") rectangular grid along the major and minor line_3: axes. To ensure the precise relative registration of the pointing line_4: positions in the grid, we wish to perform only one target acquisition line_5: and use only small angle maneuvers to obtain the spectra at each of line_6: the 23 ensuing points in the grid. The requisite observations have line_7: been indicated with GROUP NO GAP in the exposure log sheet. line_9: The observations of the star F193 are for use as a template in the line_10: Fourier quotient analysis of the NGC 224 nuclear spectra. To avoid line_11: any potential temporal changes in the instrument that might invalidate line_12: the use of these observations as a template, we request that they be line_13: scheduled within 60 days of the NGC 224 observations. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Precise wavelength calibrations are required to study the kinematics of line_2: the gas and stars in the nucleus of NGC 224 (M31). Internal WAVE line_3: calibrations are required for observations using grating G570H as line_4: indicated in the exposure log. These calibration exposures must be line_5: obtained immediately following the science exposures with no line_6: intervening motion of the FOS filter/grating wheel or apertures. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: The FOS spectra will be processed using the latest available line_2: calibration data to transform the raw count data into flux-calibrated, line_3: wavelength-calibrated images. Velocities and dispersions for the line_4: NGC 224 spectra will be obtained using Fourier quotient routines line_5: operating in IRAF based on the algorithms outlined by line_6: Sargent et al (1977). In addition, we will test more complex line_7: dynamical models for NGC 224 by folding spectra of our template star line_8: through the dynamical model and the point response of HST and line_9: integrating the resulting spectra over the FOS apertures line_10: (eg, Dressler & Richstone 1988; Kormendy 1988). This will allow us to line_11: test the validity of our conclusions in the face of complications due line_12: to the aberrated images produced by the primary mirror. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: The PC and WFC images of the target galaxies will be measured for line_2: precise target coordinates, so that the FOS observations can be done line_3: as blind offsets from a nearby isolated star. We have selected an line_4: appropriate star from our WFC images, but we will update the line_5: coordinates in our target list once a final geometric calibration of line_6: the WFC mosaic has been established. line_8: While not officially listed as co-investigators, the following line_9: scientists are actively involved in research with the FOS GTO team and line_10: are expected to contribute significantly to its scientific output: line_11: W. P. Blair, S. Caganoff, G. A. Kriss, A. Uomoto (JHU); line_12: R. Antonucci (UCSB); L. Armus (Cal Tech); I. Evans, A. Kinney (STScI); line_13: L. Dressel (ARC); R. Allen, P. Smith (U.
