Comparison of the profile and line_5: radial velocity of the emission lines produced by species of different ioni- line_6: zation potential will allow the study of the thermal and density stratification line_7: of the emitting regions. The degree of asymmetry of lines at different wave- line_8: lengths will allow the absorbing material be identified and located. The ratio line_9: of the UV to visible lines, such as those for O I and He II will be used to line_10: estimate the reddening along the line of sight. Ratio of emission line fluxes line_11: will be compared with models in order to derive the ionization mechanism, elec- line_12: tron temperature and density, and chemical composition of the emitting gas. line_13: The emission line properties of low luminosity will be compared with those of line_14: high luminosity objects in order to investigate the covering factor and line_15: evolutionary effects. The continumm spectrum from the UV to the IR will be line_16: used to establish the emission mechanism and the nature and luminosity of the line_17: energy source. The weak absorption lines will be used to establish the line_18: physical conditions and the chemical composition of the gas in: our Galaxy, line_19: intergalactic medium and the parent galaxy. Absorption produced by broad line line_20: clouds will give information on cloud motion and covering factor. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WU fname: CHI-CHAO inst: COMPUTER SCIENCE CORPORATION country: USA ! lname: BOGGESS fname: ALBERT inst: NASA, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Cycle 0: Object: Fairall 9 Exposures: 1-4 line_2: Cycle 1: Object: NGC 5548 5-8 line_3: Cycle 1: Object: Mrk 509 9-12 line_4: All these objects have semi-point-source nucleus. ! question: 12 section: 1 line_1: Data for Fairall 9 (cycle 0) will be published shortly after they are line_2: taken and analyzed, so they can be released according to normal procedures. line_3: However, for the cycle 1 objects, we need to combine the data from all of them line_4: for several studies, such as comparison of line profiles and their correlation line_5: with luminosity (e.g. with optical observations of high redshift quasars), the line_6: range of properties of active galaxies and the statistical significance of line_7: various observed phenomena, etc. Therefore, we request that the data for the line_8: cycle 1 objects not be released until one year after all the exposures are line_9: taken and all the data sent to our group. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: FOS UV spectra of active galaxies, complemented by visible and IR data line_2: will be used to study: the dynamics, physical conditions (and their line_3: stratification), chemical composition and the emission mechanism(s) of the line_4: emitting regions. Reddening in the emitting regions and along the line of line_5: sight will be estimated. The effects of luminosity and covering factor will be line_6: investigated. The absorption lines will be used to estimate the covering line_7: factor in the broad line region and the gas along the line of sight. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: BOGGESS fname: ALBERT title: DR. category: PI inst: NASA, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: FAIRALL9 name_2: ESO 113-IG45 descr_1: GALAXY; AGN; SEYFERT; TYPE 1 pos_1: RA=01H23M45.721S +/-0.5", pos_2: DEC=-58D48'21.84" +/-0.5" equinox: 2000 rv_or_z: V=13630 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=13.2+/-0.5 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-CONT(1520)=9.4+/-2.E-14 ! targnum: 2 name_1: NGC5548 descr_1: GALAXY; AGN; SEYFERT; TYPE 1 pos_1: RA=14H17M59.569S +/-0.5", pos_2: DEC=+25D08'12.32" +/-0.5" equinox: 2000 rv_or_z: V=4990 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=13.9+/-0.5 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-CONT(1475)=6.9+/-2.E-14 ! targnum: 3 name_1: MRK509 descr_1: GALAXY; AGN; SEYFERT; TYPE 1 pos_1: RA=20H44M09.756S +/-0.5", pos_2: DEC=-10D43'24.51" +/-0.5" equinox: 2000 rv_or_z: V=10650 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=13.1+/-0.5 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-CONT(1500)=5.4+/-1.E-14 ! ! end of fixed targets !
