The number of contributing components will line_7: be determined from existing or new 21 cm observations. Comparison with line_8: optical observations will allow the determination of chemical line_9: abundances with respect to H for elements with low-ionization lines. line_10: Images taken after the new WF/PC installation may identify the line_11: absorbing galaxy and, if so, will allow us to characterize the impact line_12: parameter and Hubble type of galaxies producing damped Ly-alpha line_13: absorption at moderate redshift. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: COHEN fname: ROSS mi: D. inst: UC, SAN DIEGO country: USA ! lname: BEAVER fname: EDWARD title: PI mi: A. inst: UC, SAN DIEGO country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We will use the FOS at low resolution to observe Lyman-alpha absorption line_2: in two quasars with known 21-cm absorption. Observations will be with the line_3: 1.0" aperture and G160L. For 3CR 196, observations will be with the red line_4: detector. The blue detector will be used for PKS1229-021. Binary search line_5: will be used and spectra will have S/N of 10-20 at the L-alpha absorption. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: These measurements have been made in only a few objects with ground based line_2: observations. HST observations will double the number where spin temperature line_3: and column depth in a quasar absorption line cloud can be measured. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Data will be reduced and analyzed on UCSD computers.
