Red giant line_3: winds can provide the most massive, sustained form of mass transfer in line_4: binaries. The symbiotic and related stars, which contain red giant and hot line_5: companion stars, permit line of sight studies through a range of red giant line_6: atmospheric heights. The goal of this work is to attempt to define both the line_7: mechanism of rapid mass loss in red giant stars and the details of mass line_8: transfer to the companion stars. Such results can provide important line_9: constraints for both stellar and binary evolution theories. line_11: In each case we expect to derive density and temperature values for the red line_12: giant wind region and compare this to the present understanding of single star line_13: conditions where low temperature, dust and molecule forming, circumstellar line_14: envelopes prevail. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: CARPENTER fname: KENNETH mi: G. inst: NASA - GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER country: USA ! lname: STENCEL fname: ROBERT mi: E. inst: COLORADO, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: LINSKY fname: JEFFREY mi: L. inst: COLORADO, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: ROBINSON fname: RICHARD mi: D. inst: CSC - ASTRONOMY PROGRAM country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: SUMMARY OF HRS OBSERVATIONS line_2: of CI CYG line_3: GRATING WAVELENGTH EXP TIME (MIN.) line_6: G160M 1400 5.0x6 line_8: G160M 1550 5.9x2 line_9: G160M 1653 4.54x3 line_11: G270M 2790 4.54x3 line_14: Cycle: 2 (priority 1) line_16: Companion wavelength calibration exposures will be line_17: taken along with each observation. line_18: Observations have been altered to account for line_19: spherical aberration effects line_20: (increase exposure time, add aperture map). line_21: EG And done in baseline cycle 0 time (GTO 1198). line_22: CI Cyg is done in augmented time (this proposal). ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Each of these objects has been extensively studied with the International line_2: Ultraviolet Explorer in "high resolution" mode. The spectral resolution of IUE line_3: permits velocity determinations (with care) of only +/- 10 km/sec in the far line_4: UV. As a consequence, IUE studies of red giant winds (10-30 km/sec) and narrow line_5: absorption features are handicapped. The superior resolution and dynamic range line_6: of HRS is required. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: DO NOT SCHEDULE DURING ECLIPSE PERIOD (JUNE-JULY 1994) line_2: (emission lines become much fainter during eclipse) ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Wavelength calibration exposures are required to allow us to obtain the maximum line_2: possible wavelength (and thus velocity) precision possible in the optical line_3: configurations chosen. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Data acquisitions will include spectral calibration. Collaboration with HRS line_2: team members will be pursued to ensure the application of optimum calibration line_3: information to remove instrumental effects and to derive absolute wavelengths, line_4: fluxes, and profile characteristics of observed spectral features. This done, line_5: lines of CI Cyg can be examined for profile asymmetries and systematic line_6: velocity differences. For CI Cyg and EG And, the O IV density diagnostic will line_7: be used. For EG And, the instrinsic profiles of the transient HE II 1640 A line_8: absorption and the complex C IV 1550 A features determined. In both cases, line_9: important fiducial observations will thus be obtained for further HST study of line_10: these very long period systems. ! question: 12 section: 1 line_1: The targets observed in this program are: line_3: 1.
