abstract:

    line_1:        FOC/96 images of bright nearby ellipticals and spirals in 3 filters extending
    line_2:        from V to UV will be obtained to study the stellar content and the shape of the
    line_3:        nuclear region.  For NGC 6251 which was already observed in cycle 0
    line_4:        observations and appears to possess a peculiar core structure, we intend to
    line_5:        perform further observations with additional filters.

    line_2:        capability to observe at short wavelengths, below the atmospheric cutoff.
    line_3:        Ground based observations have shown that a significant fraction of all
    line_4:        galaxies possess peculiar or decoupled cores, but have been unable to shed
    line_5:        light on the origin and their nature due to their limited resolution. The
    line_6:        extent to which ultraviolet excesses in elliptical galaxy interest the whole
    line_7:        galaxy or are a more local phenomenon in the cores can also only be
    line_8:        investigated with the HST.
