Nitric oxide is an important line_3: constituent of the earth's upper atmosphere but has been poorly line_4: observed. The GHRS on the HST provides an extremely simple and line_5: efficient way to measure UV absorption bands of NO using B and/or O line_6: stars acquired by the GHRS for other GO/GTO investigations. Several line_7: minutes before the target is occulted by the earth, we request a change line_8: of grating to obtain NO altitude profiles. The only time requested for line_9: this project is the last few minutes before earth occultation, a period line_10: when the instrument would otherwise be idle. line_11: Atmospheric models have demonstrated that NO in the 80-120 km region is line_12: quite sensitive to vertical transport, especially at night. The line_13: transport is typically parameterized by the eddy diffusion coefficient line_14: which is poorly known. The unique HST measurements would test and line_15: refine our knowledge of the earth's upper atmospheric diffusion line_16: processes. Once the technique is attempted and tested, it would be line_17: relatively easy for STScI to perform these observations routinely, line_18: disposing them to the archives for use by any interested scientist. line_19: This is a cheap, easy way to monitor the earth's atmosphere which line_20: should be exploited. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BRANDT fname: JOHN mi: C. inst: COLORADO, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: FESEN fname: CASSANDRA title: P.I. mi: G. inst: DARTMOUTH COLLEGE country: USA ! lname: FESEN fname: ROBERT mi: A. inst: DARTMOUTH COLLEGE country: USA ! lname: ROBLE fname: RAYMOND mi: G. inst: NCAR country: USA ! lname: GERARD fname: JEAN-CLAUDE mi: M. inst: LIEGE, UNIVERSITY OF country: BELGIUM esa: Y ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 2 section: 1 line_1: ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: FESEN fname: CASSANDRA mi: G. category: PI inst: DARTMOUTH COLLEGE addr_1: THAYER SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING addr_2: 8000 CUMMINGS HALL city: HANOVER state: NH zip: 03755 country: USA phone: 603-646-2119 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: HD91316 name_2: RHO-LEO descr_1: A, 110 pos_1: RA = 10H 32M 48.6S +/- 0.002S, pos_2: DEC = 9D 18' 24" +/- 0.002", equinox: J2000 pm_or_par: N fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 3.85, TYPE=B1IB fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-LINE(1830) = 1.39E-9 ! targnum: 2 name_1: HD037128 name_2: EPSILON-ORI descr_1: A, 110 pos_1: RA = 5H 36M 12.8S +/- 0.002S, pos_2: DEC = -1D 12' 07" +/- 0.002", equinox: J2000 pm_or_par: N fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 1.7, TYPE=B0I ! targnum: 3 name_1: HD116658 name_2: ALPHA-VIR descr_1: A, 110 pos_1: RA = 13H 25M 11.6S +/- 0.002S, pos_2: DEC = -11D 9' 41" +/- 0.002", equinox: J2000 pm_or_par: N fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 0.98, TYPE=B1 III ! targnum: 4 name_1: HD38771 name_2: KAPPA-ORI descr_1: A, 110 pos_1: RA = 05H 47M 45.3S +/- 0.002S, pos_2: DEC = -9D 40' 11" +/- 0.002", equinox: J2000 pm_or_par: N fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 2.06, TYPE= B0.5I ! ! end of fixed targets !
