MICHAEL pi_lname: RICH pi_inst: COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY pi_country: USA pi_phone: 212-854-6837 keywords_1: GLOBULAR CLUSTERS hours_pri: 4.34 num_pri: 16 wf_pc: N foc: Y fos: N ! end of coverpage abstract: line_1: The FOC will be used to obtain high-resolution images of the cores of 6 line_2: metal-rich globulars, 4 of which are known to have far-UV flux based on IUE line_3: observations. Photometry with FOC will give luminosities, temperatures, and line_4: total numbers of far-UV sources. These data will permit the stars to be placed line_5: in an HR diagram, and will constrain the evolutionary lifetimes in the UV line_6: bright phases. It will be possible to determine whether the UV bright stars line_7: are extreme horizontal branch, post-AGB, blue stragglers or accreting binaries. line_8: Because King has already imaged NGC 6624 in the UV, the filter imaging for line_9: this cluster is replaced by an objective-prism exposure. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: LIEBERT fname: JAMES W. title: PROF. inst: STEWARD OBSERVATORY, UNIV. The first 2 bands will give line_3: luminosities and temperatures, and the blue band will provide cross check to line_4: identify optically bright stars that slipped through the red leak. Each cluster line_5: will be observed for 1000 sec in each F140W and F210M, followed by 500 sec in line_6: the F342W+F2ND band. In NGC 6624, where King has already done UV imaging, line_7: an FUV objective-prism exposure is planned. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: The high spatial resolution and UV response of ST is needed to find the faint line_2: UV bright stars detected with IUE in the cores of metal rich globulars. line_3: Only EUV imaging will permit us to identify individual sources, and determine line_4: temperatures and luminosities, and therefore their evolutionary state. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: Prism exposure of NGC 6624 has tight ORIENT constraint. Prism must be line_2: oriented at 5D to prevent contamination of one interesting object from nearby line_3: bright stars. This orientation is nominal for only a brief period line_4: from Sept 7 - Oct 24. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: LIEBERT fname: JAMES W. mi: P title: PROF. category: CON inst: STEWARD OBSERVATORY addr_1: UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA city: TUCSON state: AZ zip: 85721 country: USA phone: 602-621-7661 telex: 467175 ! lname: KING fname: IVAN mi: R. title: PROF. category: CON inst: ASTRONOMY DEPT. addr_1: UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA city: BERKELEY state: CA zip: 94720 country: USA phone: 510-642-2206 telex: FAX: 510-642-3411 ! lname: RICH fname: R.
