PLANETARY SCI. ! end of coverpage abstract: line_1: Much of the scientific utility of narrow band imaging of nebulae lies line_2: in the study of stratification and structural variations among emission line_3: lines that trace regions of different density, temperature, and line_4: radiation environment. As such, these studies are not as seriously line_5: affected as some by the compromised optical performance of HST, so long line_6: as adequate signal to noise is obtained to allow reliable deconvolution line_7: of the structure present. The spatial resolution of the HST provides line_8: access to physically important scales associated with many gasdynamic line_9: and radiative processes in the ISM. In the present proposal, line_10: we request time to extend our studies of the cooling and recombining line_11: flows behind radiative shocks using images of three additional fields line_12: that cover a significant cross section of the conditions within the line_13: Cygnus Loop. We also request time to continue our study of the stellar line_14: jet and "ladder" discovered to the north of Eta Carinae, to study line_15: the interaction of the stellar wind and radiation field with a shell of line_16: gas in NGC 6888. It is proposed to observe the subarcsecond structure line_17: of the planetary nebula NGC 7027 in order to extend the studies of line_18: condensation lifetimes and interactions with the ISM. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The WFC will be used to obtain images of three fields in the line_2: Cygnus Loop SNR in emission from [O III], H alpha, and [S II]. line_3: These three lines probe a large fraction of the cooling and line_4: recombining flow behind a radiative shock. Emission from [O III] line_5: is formed before substantial recombination has occured and is a line_6: probe of conditions in the hotter portions of the flow. The WFC line_7: will also be used to obtain images of the Wolf-Rayet shell nebula line_8: NGC 6888 in emission from [O III], H alpha, [S II], and [N II]. line_9: The structure of the emission from the outlying regions around line_10: the star Eta Carinae will be studied using exposures in [O III], line_11: [S II], and [N II], as well as a continuum image taken with line_12: F547M. The WF/PC (WF mode) will be used to do narrow band line_13: imaging of the planetary nebula, NGC 7027. The nebula has a line_14: diameter of 30 arcseconds and will be centred on chip W2. Four line_15: exposures of 3600 seconds will be taken in [O III], H alpha, [N line_16: II] and He II. These images will coverage the wide range of line_17: ionization states expected for this high excitation PN. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: We are actively pursuing complementary investigations utilizing a line_2: suite of observations including ground based optical and radio line_3: imaging, IUE spectroscopy, and Einstein and ROSAT imaging. Only line_4: HST, however, provides access to the physical scales necessary to line_5: study in detail the variations in conditions behind radiative line_6: shocks, within the shell of NGC 6888, or associated with the Eta line_7: Carinae jet and ladder. HST is required for the observations of line_8: NGC 7027 for its ability to obtain very high resolution images line_9: over a moderately large field. Assuming a distance of 1.0 kpc for line_10: NGC 7027, each WF pixel corresponds to approximately 10**15 cm. line_11: It is on these scales that we expect to see differences between line_12: photoionized regions, shadow regions and shock fronts. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Images will be processed to largely remove CCD characteristics line_2: using the best calibration data available at that time. Cosmic line_3: rays will be flagged and removed using CRSPLIT difference images. line_4: Frames will be processed to partially correct for spherical line_5: aberration using a modified version of Lucy deconvolution. We line_6: expect to be able to generate adequate PSFs using stars found in line_7: the program frames themselves. Images taken through different line_8: filters will be aligned with each other and with ground based line_9: data using measured positions of stars. Where quantitive line_10: analysis such as relative fluxes of features is required, we will line_11: estimate the reliability of the deconvolved data by constructing line_12: simple models, convolving them with the PSF with the addition of line_13: appropriate noise, deconvolving in the same way the object data line_14: were deconvolved, and comparing the results with the original. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: HESTER fname: JOHN mi: J. category: CON inst: ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY addr_1: DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY city: TEMPE state: AZ zip: 85287 country: USA phone: (602) 965-0741 ! lname: CODE fname: ARTHUR mi: D. category: CON inst: UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN addr_1: ASTRONOMY DEPARTMENT city: MADISON state: WI zip: 53706 country: USA phone: (608) 262-9594 ! lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. title: PROF. category: PI inst: CALTECH addr_1: M/S 170-25 addr_2: DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL addr_3: & PLANETARY SCIENCES city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA phone: (818) 356-4900 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: NGC6995-XA descr_1: H, 506, 929 pos_1: RA= 20H 57M 19.7S +/- 0.5", pos_2: DEC= +31D 02' 37" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000.0 comment_1: YOUNG BLAST WAVE / CLOUD comment_2: ENCOUNTER IN SUPERNOVA REMNANT ! targnum: 3 name_1: NGC6995-W descr_1: H, 506, 929 pos_1: RA= 20H 45M 35.8S +/- 0.5", pos_2: DEC= +31D 06' 43" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000.0 comment_1: SHOCK WAVE / CAVITY WALL comment_2: INTERACTION IN SUPERNOVA REMNANT ! targnum: 4 name_1: NGC6888 descr_1: H, 507 pos_1: RA= 20H 12M 31.0S +/- 0.5", pos_2: DEC= +38D 27' 14" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000.0 comment_1: SHELL AROUND WOLF-RAYET STAR ! targnum: 6 name_1: NGC7027 descr_1: H, 502 pos_1: RA= 21H 07M 00.2S +/- 0.5", pos_2: DEC= +42D 14' 18" +/- 0.5" equinox: 2000.0 comment_1: PLANETARY NEBULA ! ! end of fixed targets !
