These line_3: data will provide a vital link between the cooling flow gas seen at X-ray line_4: energies and the much colder gas seen through the emission of optical line_5: lines and the absorption of X-rays. Detailed study of the relative line_6: line strengths will give information on the presence of heating mechnisms line_7: in this temperature range. Detection of these lines will also provide line_8: direct evidence in support of the hypothesis that metal-line systems line_9: commonly observed in QSO spectra are formed in cooling flows present line_10: along the line of sight. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: JOHNSTONE fname: RODERICK title: PI mi: M inst: INSTITUTE OF ASTRONOMY country: UK esa: Y ! lname: FABIAN fname: ANDREW mi: C inst: INSTITUTE OF ASTRONOMY country: UK esa: Y ! lname: EDGE fname: ALASTAIR mi: C inst: INSTITUTE OF ASTRONOMY country: UK esa: Y ! lname: CRAWFORD fname: CAROLIN mi: S inst: INSTITUTE OF ASTRONOMY country: UK esa: Y ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 2 section: 0 line_1: ! question: 3 section: 0 line_1: We propose to take a ~10,000s exposure of NGC1275 with line_2: the FOS G130H to search for absorption due to the CIV line_3: (1550A) doublet and other lines as the gas in the cooling line_4: flow drops down through temperatures ~1E5K. ! question: 4 section: 0 line_1: This proposal requires satellite time because the strong line_2: resonance lines are in the ultraviolet part of the line_3: spectrum.
