These will reach a limiting magnitude of about 27.0 line_3: on the AB system and will complement existing ground-based data line_4: that reaches a comparable depth in the optical U, B, V and I bands line_5: and in the infrared K band. These data will thus extend our photo- line_6: metric survey to a full decade of wavelength. The data will define (a) line_7: where and at what rate star-formation is occuring in the Universe at line_8: redshifts around z = 0.5 and (b) will define the spectral energy line_9: distributions and hence constrain the redshifts of the population of line_10: very blue "flat-spectrum" galaxies. Each one will cover an approximately 80x80 square line_3: arcsec area with an effective integration per point of about 14,400 seconds. ! question: 4 section: 0 line_1: HST has a unique capability for deep imaging at wavelengths shortward of line_2: 3000 A. line_3: This program is an integral part of an extensive ground-based study of the line_4: deep sky at high galactic latitudes. Extremely deep images of this small line_5: area of sky have been obtained at optical and infrared wavelengths in a line_6: continuing program using the telescopes on Mauna Kea. We have in hand line_7: images of these fields at U, B, V, I and K that reach limiting AB magnitudes line_8: (1 sigma) for galactic images (3 arcsec aperture) of 27.0, 27.0, 26.5, 26.0 line_9: and 25.8 respectively. These and the other two fields observed in Cycle 1 line_10: (at 22hrs and 13hrs) are also being extensively studied spectroscopically. line_11: Redshifts have been obtained for all objects with B < 24 in this 17 hr line_12: field. line_13: Since the far-ultraviolet HST data will be interpreted primarily by line_14: comparison with the existing ground-based data at wavelengths beyond 3200 line_15: A, the potential high resolution aspect of the HST data is not per se line_16: required.
