This proposed line_4: study will attempt to 1) confirm that the energy distribution of the primary line_5: is a hot Rayleigh-Jeans spectrum persisting from the nova outburst; 2) line_6: search for photospheric features which characterize the field strength and line_7: composition of the atmosphere; and 3) search for strong emission features line_8: due to CNO-enriched gas which was processed in the nova event and is now line_9: being re-accreted by the white dwarf. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: SCHMIDT fname: GARY title: DR. inst: UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA country: USA ! lname: LIEBERT fname: JAMES W. title: DR. inst: UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA country: USA ! lname: STOCKMAN fname: HERVEY S. title: DR. inst: SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 2 section: 1 line_1: ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The proposed study of V1500 Cyg is a typical low-resolution spectroscopic line_2: observation of a blue stellar object. Routine acquisition will be made line_3: into a 1 arcsec square aperture. The blue channel of FOS combined with line_4: the G160L grating provide sufficient sensitivity and spectral coverage to line_5: resolve Zeeman-split photospheric absorption features and emission lines line_6: arising in the gas funnel. Twenty ACCUM sums, each of duration 10 minutes, line_7: provide ample temporal resolution to sample any orbital modulation of the line_8: continuum and major emission lines, and a total integration time sufficient line_9: to reach the desired data quality. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: V1500 Cyg has been detected at virtually the faintness limit of IUE. line_2: That measurement is insufficient to answer the scientific questions posed line_3: in this proposal, but demonstrates feasibility of the scientific objectives. line_4: The proposed observations require the UV capabilities, of HST, and will line_5: accomplish the bulk of what is possible to do spectroscopically withthe line_6: spacecraft. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: N/A ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: N/A ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: a) The stellar continuum, which will be very well defined from 1250-2520A line_2: in the summed exposure, will be analyzed for temperature and reddening line_3: by comparison with current hot white dwarf models and the extensive line_4: database accumulated by IUE/ROSAT/EINSTEIN. b) State-of-the-art modelling line_5: techniques (e.g. Wickramasinghe et al.) will be employed to obtain the line_6: best estimates of surface field strength, mass and composition from the line_7: Zeeman-split Ly-alpha and HeII 1640 absorption features. c) The likely line_8: emission lines of NV, CIV, SiIV, and SiIII will be compared with IUE line_9: spectra of other novae, AM Her variables, and other CVs to crudely line_10: characterize the composition of the accreted material, and thereby line_11: evaluate the importance of re-accretion of nuclear processed material line_12: previously captured from the ejecta by the secondary star. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: N/A ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: GO #2686 - Ultraviolet Emission from Magnetic Variables. A portion of line_2: data is in hand and is being analyzed. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: Regular ground-based photometric/polarimetric monitoring of V1500 Cyg is line_2: being continued due to the importance of this asynchronous system for line_3: studying the locking processes which operate in AM Her binaries. Under line_4: separate sources of support, we intend to augment these broad-band line_5: observations with optical spectrophotometry at the MMT during the line_6: approximate epoch of the proposed HST observations. The Univ. of Arizona line_7: attracts an excellent pool of graduate students, several of which have line_8: earned or are currently earning their doctorates in the general field of line_9: degenerate stars and accretion binaries. Both Schmidt and Liebert own line_10: SUN Sparcstations for data reduction/analysis purposes and the essential line_11: software for modelling the Zeeman-split photospheric absorption features line_12: was ported to Steward last year. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: SCHMIDT fname: GARY title: DR. category: PI inst: STEWARD OBSERVATORY addr_1: UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA city: TUCSON state: AZ zip: 85721 country: USA phone: 602-621-6534 telex: 467175 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: V1500-CYG name_2: NOVA-CYG-1975 descr_1: A,120,150,153,161 pos_1: RA=21H 11M 36.57S +/- 0.1", pos_2: DEC=48D 09' 02.5" +/- 0.2", pos_3: PLATE-ID=02RW, equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: NO fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V = 17.06, B-V = 0.38, TYPE = F0, ! ! end of fixed targets !
