At z > 1.7, Ly-alpha emission has been detected in line_3: powerful radio galaxies and recently in a few proto-galactic disks which line_4: give rise to damped Ly-alpha absorption in the spectra of background line_5: quasars. At low redshift, it has been detected in some starburst line_6: galaxies. However, not all the nearby starburst galaxies show Ly-alpha line_7: emission which may be due to either absorption by dust grains and/or line_8: the presence of an underlying B star population. line_9: At intermediate redshifts (z=0.5), objects giving rise to MgII absorption line_10: systems in quasar spectra have been identified with field galaxies of line_11: very extended gaseous envelopes. These galaxies show signs of stellar line_13: formation activity, revealed by their blue continuum and OII 3727 line_14: emission and which should also be traced by their Ly-alpha emission. line_15: We propose to observe the Ly-alpha emission of a few of these absorbing line_16: starburst galaxies with fairly strong OII 3727 (and H-beta) line_17: emission.
