These measurements will provide high quality line_5: data for the most important high temperature gas diagnostic line_6: accessible with the HST. The data will be used to study the line_7: line broadening and component structure of the N V absorption line_8: and to probe the general prevalence of this important ion line_9: in Galactic halo gas. We will study the velocity line_10: correspondence between the N V and cooler gas traced by line_11: Mg II, S II, and Si II. We will obtain information about line_12: high temperature Galactic halo gas along 3 sight lines, line_13: including two extragalactic ones. With this information line_14: we aim to better understand the origin of Galactic halo line_15: gas, the ionization of the gas, and those processes occurring line_16: in the Galactic disk which result in the venting of energy line_17: into the Galactic halo. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: SAVAGE fname: BLAIR title: PI mi: D. inst: UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON country: USA ! lname: SEMBACH fname: KENNETH mi: R. inst: UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON country: USA ! lname: LU fname: LIMIN inst: UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: We will make GHRS observations of 1 halo star and 2 bright line_2: AGNs. In all cases we will use the G160M grating centered line_3: at 1250 angstroms. This setup will cover the following line_4: interstellar resonance lines: N V 1238.8 and 1242.8, line_5: Mg II 1239.9 and 1240.4, S II 1250.6, 1253.8, and 1259.5, line_6: and Si II 1260.4. For the halo star, the small aperture line_7: will be used. Because of their faintness, the 2 AGNs will line_8: be observed with the large aperture; the degraded resolution line_9: is acceptable. The extragalactic measurements are important line_10: for determining the total column density of N V through line_11: the halo. All measurements will be obtained with two line_12: samples per diode substepping, and with standard FP-SPLIT. line_13: All S/N and exposure times are estimated using IUE spectra line_14: of the targets. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: The proposed study requires UV capabilities. The IUE is line_2: incapable of carrying out the proposed study because of line_3: its limited spectral resolution and S/N characteristics. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Pt lamp comparison spectrum will be required for each line_2: target to obtain accurate wavelength calibration. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Data reduction will be done using CALHRS developed by line_2: the GHRS science team. Two of the proposers are GHRS line_3: team members. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: The University of Wisconsin will provide data handling line_2: and analysis facilities available through the Midwest line_3: Astronomical Data Reduction and Analysis Facility. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: SAVAGE fname: BLAIR mi: D. category: PI inst: UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON addr_1: DEPARTMENT OF ASTRONOMY addr_2: 475 NORTH CHARTER STREET city: MADISON state: WI zip: 53706 country: USA phone: 608-262-2395 telex: 265452 UOFWISC MDS ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: HD156359 name_2: SAO253880 name_3: GSC9056-926 descr_1: A, 105 pos_1: PLATE-ID=02I8, pos_2: RA=17H 21M 18.804S+/-0.5", pos_3: DEC=-62D 55' 4.296"+/-0.5" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: NO rv_or_z: V=-64 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=9.68, TYPE=O9III fluxnum_2: 1 fluxval_2: B-V=-0.14, E(B-V)=0.14 ! targnum: 2 name_1: MARK509 name_2: IRAS2041-109 descr_1: E, 312 pos_1: PLATE-ID=00E1, pos_2: RA=20H 44M 9.759S+/-1", pos_3: DEC=-10D 43' 24.50"+/-1" equinox: J2000 pm_or_par: NO rv_or_z: Z=0.0355 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=13.0 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-LINE(1216)=4+/-1E-13 fluxnum_3: 2 fluxval_3: W-LINE(1216)=30+/-6 ! targnum: 3 name_1: NGC3783 name_2: IRAS1136-374 descr_1: E, 312 pos_1: PLATE-ID=00JJ, pos_2: RA=11H 39M 1.662S+/-1", pos_3: DEC=-37D 44' 19.79"+/-1" equinox: J2000 pm_or_par: NO rv_or_z: Z=0.0096 fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=13.0 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: F-LINE(1216)=3+/-1E-13 fluxnum_3: 2 fluxval_3: W-LINE(1216)=30+/-10 ! ! end of fixed targets !
