Galaxies will be imaged with the line_4: F555W and F785LP filters. Serveral objects known to contain ionized gas will line_5: also be imaged in narrow-band filters to obtain the gas distribution. In M31 a line_6: special series of ultra-violet exposures will be taken to study the hot stellar line_7: population. The sample of objects contains several normal ellipticals covering line_8: a broad range in nuclear surface brightness and concentration class, several line_9: nearby galaxies covering a range of Hubble types, and a few Seyfert and line_10: otherwise slightly abnormal nuclei. The images taken will also be searched for line_11: bright stars, inner globular clusters, and absorbing interstellar dust. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Direct exposures are proposed with the Planetary Camera and filters F555W and line_2: F785LP of duration 2 sec to 2700 sec. Desired S/N is 100 in the central pixel. line_3: Shorter exposures are included for cosmic ray removal and possible stellar line_4: nuclear components. Special UV exposures of M31 are also proposed with the line_5: Wide Field Camera. Standard stars are selected near each galaxy to monitor the line_6: point-spread function (PSF). It may not actually be necessary to observe all line_7: of these if the PSF proves to be stable. Distribution of observations with line_8: observing period: line_10: 1st Year - NGC 221, NGC 224 (PC), NGC 3031, NGC 598(PC), NGC 3379, NGC 1052, line_11: NGC 1316, NGC 4278, NGC 3311, NGC1068, NGC 4151, NGC 4283, line_12: NGC 4472, NGC 4594, NGC 128, NGC3998, NGC 5102, NGC 2681, line_13: NGC 5457, NGC 1097, NGC 4736, NGC936, NGC 3384 line_15: 2nd Year NGC 4621, NGC 1600, NGC 4552, NGC4649, NGC 5813, NGC 5194, line_16: NGC 4274, NGC 5195, NGC 2815, NGC 7768, NGC224 (WF), NGC 598 (WF), line_17: NGC 4565 (WF) line_18: CYCLE Specifiations given in exposure list. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: For many objects, an exposure sequence has been designed that is intended to line_2: fit within one orbit. Such objects are designated by the special requirement line_3: "SEQ X-Y WITHIN 50 m NO GAP". The purpose of this requirement is to ensure line_4: that all exposures register as well as possible, hence the request that the line_5: telescope not be slewed between exposures. In no case does the exposure line_6: sequence extend beyond 50m (one orbital opportunity). ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Limiting noise source is readout noise; exposures should not be interrupted. line_2: Special calibration of point spread function (PSF) may be needed for proper line_3: deconvolution of nuclear structure. A star near each galaxy is included for line_4: this purpose. It is also desired that all exposures longer than 1000 sec be line_5: taken after the telescope has passed beyond the limb of the Earth (see note on line_6: "dark time on exposure logsheets). It is not requested that the telescope line_7: actually be within the Earth's shadow. Dark time is needed to minimize diffuse line_8: scattered light and max. signal at faint surface brightness levels. The above line_9: guideline of 1000 sec may need modification after real experience in orbit. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: Special orientations: NGC4565 - for maximum spatial coverage of dust lane and line_2: disk in a single exposure. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Nuclear luminosity distributions and color gradients will be studied in 33 line_2: nearby galaxies using filters F555W and F785LP and the Planetary Camera. line_3: Narrow-band images will also be taken of nuclei containing interstellar gas. line_4: Images will be searched for bright stars, globular clusters, and interstellar line_5: dust. UV exposures of M31 using the WFC will be used to study hot stars in the line_6: stellar population in the nuclear bulge. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. category: PI inst: CALTECH ! lname: BAUM fname: WILLIAM category: CON inst: LOWELL OBSERVATORY addr_1: PLANETARY RESEARCH CT. addr_2: P.O.
