We will study it with the FOC F/288 high resolution mode line_7: to determine the absolute diameter (and thus calibrate the asteroid diameter line_8: scales), the irregularities of the body, and the reasons for variations during line_9: its rotation (about 9.1 hours). The surface structure will be resolved to about line_10: 10x10 km per pixel, and also studied during rotation. The same will be done for line_11: a number of other asteroids. The position of the rotational pole will be line_12: determined, as well as the sence of rotation. line_15: Several asteroids are suspected to consist not only of one single body, but to line_16: be binary or multiple in nature, or to have satellites. The proposed line_17: observations will provide answers to these questions. line_19: The FOC in F/288 mode will for the first time produce direct images of line_20: asteroids with a resolution sufficient to discern surface details. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: SCHOBER fname: HANS mi: J. inst: GRAZ UNIVERSITY country: AUSTRIA esa: X ! lname: CALDWELL fname: JOHN mi: J. inst: SPACE ASTROPHYSICS LABORATORY, ISTS country: CANADA ! lname: WEIGELT fname: GERD inst: MPI F. For this purpose exposures line_3: have to be taken with different ST roll angles, spaced as closely as possible line_4: in time. line_8: the rolled exposure can only be taken one orbit after the unrolled exposure. line_9: This time line should allow the determination of the direction of the rotation line_10: and of the pole axis, plus a confirmation of the potometric rotation period. line_11: One of the priority 1 objects shall be observed during cycle 1. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Only the FOC provides the required resolution. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: Asteroids have to be observed close to opposition. The scheduling of the line_2: observations is therefore closely tied to the ST launch date and to the line_3: availability of the moving target acquisition mode. We expect to work closely line_4: with the schedulers at the ST ScI. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Quick-look data analysis will be carried out at the STScI immediately following line_2: the observations. line_4: Final data analysis will be carried out at the European Coordinating Facility, line_5: and at the computer installations of the home institutions of the other line_6: proposers. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: Our institutions will supply the following resources: line_3: Salary, travel, data analysis facilities, research support, administrative line_4: support, office space. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: The purpose of this investigation is to determine physical properties of line_2: selected asteroids: diameters, shapes, surface structure, spin axis line_3: orientation, rotation, and possible binary nature. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: ALBRECHT fname: RUDOLF category: PI inst: ESA, EUROPEAN COORDINATING FACILITY ! ! end of general_form_address records !
