This engineering test proposal will determine if line_4: this is an artifact which results from an internal reflection off the line_5: back of the "preflash" filter which is left in the optical beam line_6: following the activation of the internal calibration lamps. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES title: DR. mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! lname: PICK fname: SCOTT inst: JPL country: USA ! lname: SCHNEIDER fname: GLENN inst: STSCI country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 2 section: 1 line_1: This proposal will perform an engineering test to determine whether line_2: or not the WFPC SOFA mechanism must be cleared prior to taking KSPOT line_3: exposures. line_4: The default operating mode for the WFPC now is to preflash all exposures. line_5: Preflashing KSPOT exposures leaves filters in place in the SOFA line_6: mechanism prior to turning on the KSPOT lamp. Such KSPOT exposures have line_7: exhibited anomalous characteristics on the WFC side which may be due to line_8: scattered light off the back of the filter closest to the pyramid. A line_9: diffuse image formed from near one outer edge of W2 with peak intensities line_10: of ~30% of full-well (nearly twice that of the KSPOTS themselves). It line_11: is conjectured light from the KSPOT lamp, shining through the Baum spot, is line_12: reflected back to the pyramid off of the "preflash" filter nearest the line_13: pyramid. This conjecture may be affirmed (or disproven) by taking two line_14: WFC KSPOT exposures, one with the "preflash" filters in the beam and one line_15: with the SOFA clear. If this extraneous intensity seen in W2 KSPOTS is line_16: indeed due to this possible source of internal reflection then this line_17: knowledge must be folded into the operating scenario for performing KSPOT line_18: exposures (i.e., the SOFA mechanism must be cleared prior to turning on line_19: the KPOTS lamp). ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The KSPOT exposures will be taken in the WFC: one not preflashed (with line_2: the SOFA clear of any filters), one preflashed (which will leave the line_3: preflash filters in the beam). ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: NO RT requirements. line_3: Note for SPSS: To assist in scheduling these internal observations, line_4: these exposures MAY be taken inside of the SAA (i.e., the SAA 05 line_5: avoidance rule for the WFC may be lifted for these exposures). This line_6: is NOT a requirement. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Data reduction and analysis will be performed at STScI on the line_2: "Development cluster" VAXes used by SESD (DEVVAX and/or IDTVAX). ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: SCHNEIDER fname: GLENN category: PI inst: ST SCI ! lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. title: DR. inst: CALTECH addr_1: MS 175 city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA phone: 818-356-4900 ! lname: PICK fname: SOTT category: CON inst: JPL country: USA phone: 301-338-4834 ! ! end of general_form_address records !
