During GTO time, our line_3: targets include a selected field within Baade's Window (about 4 degrees from line_4: the galactic nucleus) and another bulge field about 8 degrees from the nucleus. line_5: Stepped exposures with U, V, and I filters will enable us to correct for line_6: reddening on a small spatial scale, to extend the color-magnitude diagram line_7: several magnitudes, and to investigate the low-mass portion of the luminosity line_8: function. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. inst: CALTECH country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Stepped exposures with the WFC will be made using three filters (F336W, F555W, line_2: and F785LP) in two fields in the galactic bulge. Exposure sequences for each line_3: field are calculated to fit into the dark time of three orbits, one for each line_4: filter. The shortest exposures are designed to record the brightest bulge line_5: stars (not foreground) without saturation. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: Uninterrupted exposures are needed to maximize S/N. For all exposures >/- 1000 line_2: sec, we request dark time. This is needed to minimize scattered light. By line_3: dark time, we mean that the telescope should be beyond the brightly lit limb of line_4: the Earth in the dark half of the orbit. We do not require that this telescope line_5: actually be within the Earth's shadow. See note on exposure logsheet. The line_6: above guideline of 1000 sec may need revision after experience in orbit. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Deep U,V,I exposures in Baade's Window and in an "8-degree field" will extend line_2: the color-magnitude diagram and luminosity function to very faint magnitudes, line_3: greatly increasing our knowledge of the stellar population in the nuclear bulge line_4: of the Galaxy. Owing to the presence of reddening and crowding, simulations line_5: have been made to ensure the best choice of camera (WFC) and filters for line_6: reaching the faintest stars. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: WESTPHAL fname: JAMES mi: A. title: PROF. category: PI inst: CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY addr_1: M/S 170-25 addr_2: DIVISION OF GEOLOGICAL addr_3: & PLANETARY SCIENCES city: PASADENA state: CA zip: 91125 country: USA ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 2 name_1: FIELD181834-325058 name_2: 8-DEG-FIELD descr_1: E, 301, 913 pos_1: RA= 18H18M34S +/-0.1S, pos_2: DEC= -32D50'58" +/-1", equinox: 2000 comment_1: THE MAGNITUDES IN FL.
