The study will be line_4: conducted using the narrow band and interference filters centered on bright line_5: nebular emission features of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen. A wide combination line_6: of unique FOC capabilities including coronography, polarimetry and the high line_7: resolution apodizer will be employed to study in depth the most representative line_8: object of each class of cataclysmic variables. These capabilities will allow line_9: shells of ejecta around recent novae to be distinguished from the central star line_10: at a much earlier stage in their evolution and to detect very much fainter line_11: ejecta from old novae than possible from the ground. The basic aim of this line_12: study is to gain insight into the physical conditions of the nebula, the line_13: geometry of the nova explosion and the nature of the interstellar medium local line_14: to the nova. The proposed study of symbiotic systems, on the other hand, line_15: should permit resolving the objects into their postulated compact sources, line_16: barely resolving the accretion disk around the hot component, and determining line_17: the precise connection of the disk with the jets. The program also aims at line_18: assessing the possibility of using novae as extragalactic distance indicators. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: MACKAY fname: CRAIG mi: D. inst: CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY country: UNITED KINGDOM esa: X ! lname: PARESCE fname: FRANCESCO inst: SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE country: USA esa: X ! lname: MACCHETTO fname: F.
