The line_4: spatial distribution of these elements is determined by the photochemical and line_5: particle dissociation processes responsible for their production and by the line_6: transport mechanisms responsible for their distribution. The presence of these line_7: planetary constituents is revealed by emissions of the HI, 1216 A Lyman alpha line_8: line, the H2 Lyman and Werner, and the N2 Lyman-Birge-Hopfield bands in the line_9: 1000-2000A region, all produced by particle impact excitation and/or resonance line_10: scattering of sunlight. Spatial and spectral images of the H, H2 and N2 line_11: atmospheres around these objects, consequently, represent key diagnostic tools line_12: in the investigation of these fundamental planetary phenomena. Moreover, Lyman line_13: alpha images of the giant planets taken at high enough spatial resolution will line_14: permit a determination of the abundance of deuterium, an extremely sensitive line_15: tracer of primordial nucleosynthesis. We propose to obtain a series of high line_16: resolution images of the giant planets' upper atmospheres and near-planetary line_17: environments in the far uv that are unobtainable from the ground or from the line_18: present generation of planetary probes. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: GERARD fname: JEAN CLAUDE inst: LIEGE, UNIVERSITY OF country: BELGIUM esa: X ! lname: VIDAL-MADJAR fname: ALFRED inst: INSTITUTE OF ASTROPHYSICS, PARIS country: FRANCE esa: X ! lname: PARESCE fname: FRANCESCO inst: ESA, SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE country: USA esa: X ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: line_3: - 2.5 hours of this program charged to Caldwell. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: We propose to obtain a series of high resolution images of the giant planets' line_2: upper atmospheres and near-planetary environments in the far uv that are line_3: unobtainable from the ground or from the present generation of planetary line_4: probes.
