The earth flat line_4: fields can be accomplished in parallel with any other instrument. line_5: The Orion Nebula will require dedicated time and ST slews. The line_6: data are required to update the FOC photometric files used in SOGS line_7: pipeline processing. This test is related to FOC Relative Calibration line_8: (Prop 1516) which provides the optical flat fields using the onboard line_9: LED's. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: PARESCE fname: FRANCESCO title: DR. inst: SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Before any meaningful imaging science can be accomplished, the line_2: FOC has to be flat fielded to at least 3% accuracy in order to line_3: remove the instrument signature. Since the pixel to pixel variations line_4: vary only slowly with wavelength, this calib needs to be performed line_5: in small no. of UV filter wavelengths chosen to cover uniformly line_6: the UV response range of the FOC. The only inherently flat field line_7: for the FOC is the Lyman alpha geocoronal emission pattern and, line_8: possibly, certain regions of the Orion Nebula near the Trapezium line_9: (the inner nebula). The daylit earth can be used together with line_10: the automatic SC scan across the disk and only for the F/96 due line_11: to its red leak suppressing capabilities. The inner regions of line_12: the Orion Nebula will be explored systematically for their line_13: suitability in terms of signal and uniformity before the long line_14: duration scans are undertaken. Ground-based calibration images line_15: do exist. line_16: In parallel time, the sunlit earth will be used to generate an line_17: F/96 flat field at 3400 and 2400 A. Total time for this program line_18: is 5.6 hours. line_19: In prime time, twelve exposures of a region in the inner nebula line_20: will be obtained with the F/48 camera in the 512 x 1024 format line_21: in order to assess the expected count rates and field uniformity. line_22: Total time for this part is 2 hours. ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: Analysis of these f/48 images is expected to take about 30 line_2: (+/- 10) days, after which time the actual F/96 and F/48 fields, line_3: scan directions and speeds will be chosen, the cameras will be line_4: flat fielded at the 1000 counts/pixel level. This will require line_5: a total of 28 hours. line_6: The F/48 camera will be calibrated at Lyman alpha using the line_7: geocorona in daytime. Such a program will require 20 hours line_8: total exposure time. line_9: This proposal is for F/48 Earth-Flats in spec mode only. See line_10: proposal 1515 for rest of observation. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: Prerequisites: line_2: Mode III target acquisition capability line_3: Preliminary flate field linearity (prop 1509) analysis done for line_4: the F/96. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: PARESCE fname: FRANCESCO category: PI inst: SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE ! ! end of general_form_address records !
