We propose line_4: to search recent SNR's for any remnant star associated with them, and to study line_5: the photometric variability of known examples of neutron stars which are line_6: remnants of supernovae. The results will place important constraints on the line_7: mechanisms by which neutron stars originate. line_8: Revision History: Received on RPS 9/1/89; Added to SCCS 9/5/89 line_9: RPSS V7.2 remote & local; fixed small syntax err - SALM 9/12/89 line_10: Various small changes - Dolan 9/27/89 ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BLESS fname: ROBERT mi: C. inst: WISCONSIN, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: DOLAN fname: JOSEPH mi: F. inst: NASA, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER country: USA ! lname: ELLIOT fname: JAMES mi: L. inst: MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY country: USA ! lname: ROBINSON fname: EDWARD mi: L. inst: TEXAS, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: WHITE fname: RICHARD mi: L. inst: SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE country: USA ! lname: VAN CITTERS fname: G. mi: W. inst: NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Searches for remnant stars at the center of recent SNR's would be conducted by line_2: the HSP in conjunction with the WFC and possibly the FOS. A WFC deep image of line_3: the SNR in the UV would reveal any suitably placed central images. These line_4: images would then be observed serially by the HSP in a wide bandwidth filter line_5: and the data analyzed for pulsation by fast Fourier transform methods. line_6: Observations in 3 different UV filters would allow the star to be plotted on a line_7: color-color diagram. Candidates with a hot color temperature or pulsation line_8: could be confirmed by an FOS spectrum. A neutron star spectrum would be line_9: expected to be a blue, featureless continuum a la the Crab nebula pulsar, but line_10: SS433 has a spectrum dominated by emission lines with relativistic velocity line_11: offsets and wavelength variations apparent from day to day. Hence, any line_12: candidate with an unusual spectrum would merit further study. line_14: Cycle 0 (SV/GTO) Observations: 1H 4M ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: (1) remnant stars are known from presently available upper limits on most SNR line_2: central stars to be fainter than V = 20; searching for a fainter star requires line_3: the limiting magnitude available only on ST. line_5: (2) remnant stars are expected to have spectra which peak strongly in the UV. line_6: This wavelength region is available for faint objects only on ST. line_8: (3) one method of identifying remnant stars searches for their pulsational line_9: periods which are expected to be in the sub-second to second range. Freedom line_10: from noise induced by atmospheric scintillation makes the HSP the most line_11: efficient and sensitive instrument available to detect such periodicities. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Deep images of SNR's in the UV will be analyzed to determine whether any line_2: suitably placed central images exist. The HSP photometric observations of line_3: these candidates will be analyzed by power spectrum analysis methods to line_4: determine if any pulsation exists (as it does in the Crab Nebula and line_5: 1E2259+586). Three filter photometry will be analyzed to determine the color line_6: temperature of the candidate in a color-color diagram; candidate stars with a line_7: hot color temperature will be confirmed by an FOS spectrum. Neutron star line_8: spectra are expected to be blue, featureless continua, as in the Crab Nebula, line_9: but SS433 has a spectrum dominated by emission lines with relativistic velocity line_10: offsets and wavelength variations apparent from day to day. Any candidate with line_11: an unusual spectrum will be studied further photometrically. Wide bandwidth line_12: photometric observations will be analyzed by power spectrum analysis methods line_13: for pulsation in the source. Photometric observations will also be analyzed line_14: for longer periodicities which may be present in the light curve. Concurrent line_15: polarimetric observations will also be searched for longer periodicities line_16: present in the source. The results will be applied to determining the line_17: location, geometry, and motion of the emitting regions. ! question: 12 section: 1 line_1: Searching for the remnant stars in supernova remnants is directly related to line_2: Scientific Objective 2 specified in the HSP CEI specifications, "searches for line_3: optical counterparts to radio pulsars". This program is also related to line_4: Scientific Objective 5, "determination of the wavelength and time dependence of line_5: polarization in compact binaries, white dwarfs. . . etc.". ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Recent supernova remnants will be searched for any remnant star associated line_2: with them. The photometric variability of neutron stars which are remnant line_3: stars of supernova explosions will be monitored. The results will be used to line_4: place constraints upon the mechanisms by which neutron stars can originate. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: BLESS fname: ROBERT mi: C title: DR category: PI inst: WISCONSIN, UNIVERSITY OF addr_1: SPACE ASTRONOMY LAB city: MADISON state: WI zip: 53706 country: USA ! lname: BLESS fname: ROBERT mi: C. category: PI inst: UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN addr_1: SPACE ASTRONOMY LAB. city: MADISON state: WI zip: 53706 country: USA ! lname: DOLAN fname: JOSEPH mi: F. category: CON inst: NASA, GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER addr_1: CODE 681 city: GREENBELT state: MD zip: 20771 country: USA phone: (301)286-5920 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: SS433 name_2: V1343-AQL descr_1: REMNANT STAR IN SNR pos_1: RA = 19H 09M 21.3S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = +04D 53' 54" +/- 1" equinox: 1950 acqpr_1: BKG fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: V=14 ! targnum: 2 name_1: 1E2259+586 descr_1: X-RAY PULSAR IN SNR pos_1: RA = 22H 59M 02.5S +/- 0.5S, pos_2: DEC = +58D 36' 38" +/- 1" equinox: ^ acqpr_1: ^ ! targnum: 3 name_1: LMC-N49 descr_1: GAMMA-RAY BURST SOURCE pos_1: RA = 05H 25M 56S +/- 1S, pos_2: DEC = -66D 07' 07" +/- 1" equinox: ^ acqpr_1: ^ ! targnum: 4 name_1: MSH15-52 descr_1: X-RAY PULSAR IN SNR pos_1: RA = 15H 09M 59.1S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = -58D 56' 58" +/- 1" equinox: ^ acqpr_1: ^ ! targnum: 6 name_1: 4U1458-41 descr_1: X-RAY SOURCE IN SNR 1006 pos_1: RA = 14H 59M 38S +/- 1S, pos_2: DEC = -41D 44.0' +/- 0.1' equinox: 1950 acqpr_1: BKG ! targnum: 7 name_1: TYCHOS-SNR descr_1: X-RAY SOURCE; descr_2: SNR pos_1: RA = 00H 22M 30.9S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = +63D 51' 49" +/- 1" equinox: ^ acqpr_1: ^ ! targnum: 8 name_1: KEPLERS-SNR descr_1: ^ pos_1: RA = 17H 27M 41.7S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = -21D 27' 09" +/- 1" equinox: ^ acqpr_1: ^ ! targnum: 9 name_1: CAS-A descr_1: ^ pos_1: RA = 23H 21M 11S +/- 1S, pos_2: DEC = +58D 32' 40" +/- 1" equinox: ^ acqpr_1: ^ ! targnum: 10 name_1: CTB-80 descr_1: X-RAY SOURCE; descr_2: SNR pos_1: RA = 19H 51M 02.5S +/- 0.1S, pos_2: DEC = +32D 44' 50.2" +/- 0.1" equinox: 1950 acqpr_1: BKG ! ! end of fixed targets !
