It will only be used in Cycle 1 if a full map line_2: of the SAA is desired and parallel science observations are available. line_4: High energy particles trapped in the radiation belts, primarily the South line_5: Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) will raise background levels and degrade science data line_6: quality. The ground system has the capability to predict entry and exit from line_7: the region in order to schedule science observations appropriately. The goals line_8: of this test are to measure the flux levels through the SAA with the HSP, to line_9: monitor fluctuations in the SAA on timescales of several days, and to identify line_10: any other regions of high particle fluxes in the HST orbit. These data will be line_11: used to verify the general structure of existing empirical models from which line_12: the boundaries used by the ground system will originate, to relate HSP line_13: count rates to the particle fluxes, and to scale fluctuations in line_14: the fluxes with respect to the HSP. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 2 section: 1 line_1: THIS IS A CYCLE 1 CONTINGENCY PROPOSAL. line_2: The goals of this test are to measure the flux levels line_3: through the SAA and record fluctuations in the field on line_4: timescales of several days using the HSP. These data will be line_5: used to verify the general structure of existing models, to sc line_6: ale fluctuations, and to relate HSP background levels to the line_7: particle fluxes. The contours describing the SAA boundaries line_8: are needed by the ground system, which has the capability to line_9: assign a unique contour for each SI. The strength of the line_10: particle fluxes through the SAA is a function of planar line_11: position and altitude. ! question: 2 section: 2 line_1: The HSP will be used to monitor the background levels over line_2: multiple successive orbits on a single day. line_4: Mean HSP background levels will be related to models of the line_5: particle flux and the overall structure of the SAA verified. line_6: Fluctuations as a function of time about the mean values will line_7: be studied in order to scale the background levels measured line_8: by the other SIs during the OV/SV period. ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Test Procedure: line_2: 1) Select the HSP/PHOT configuration, 2IDT Mode (VIS and UV1), line_3: filters F355M-VIS, F240W-UV1, byte format, SAMPLE-TIME=10sec, line_4: target DARK. line_5: SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Sequence NON-INT line_6: 2) First orbit: NUM EXP=9, EXP TIME=10 MIN; Observation must NOT line_7: impinge on SAA. line_8: 3) Orbits 2 through 9: NUM EXP=72, TIME=10MIN; Orbit #2 must line_9: begin prior to SAA entry and continue through the SAA so line_10: that remaining 6 orbits occur within the SAA. line_11: 4) Last orbit: NUM EXP=9, EXP TIME=10MIN; last orbit to occur after line_12: exit from the SAA to look for enduring detector effects. ! question: 4 section: 0 line_1: Submitted as an Observatory Level Test. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: - The requirement for NON-INTERRUPTED observations spanning 9 orbits line_2: may be relaxed ONLY if absolutely necessary AND for very few and line_3: short periods during the orbit which lies OUTSIDE of the SAA. line_4: - The first orbit of the 9 to be scheduled outside SAA. line_5: - The second orbit must include the initial entry into the SAA. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: The scientific goals of this test is to measure flux levels line_2: throughout the HST orbit: through the SAA in particular and in line_3: addition to identify any other regions of high particle flux. line_4: The strength of the particle fluxes through the SAA is a function of line_5: planar location and altitude. Therefore, continuous and un-interrupted line_6: observations are required to satisfy these goals. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: The data reduction and analysis will include the following: line_2: - to bin HSP data if necessary and associate count rate line_3: with latitude, longitude, and altitude (extracted from OMS). line_5: - to determine mean HSP count rates as a function of position over time line_6: and relate the HSP count rates to the mean fluxes predicted line_7: by the model (linear relation may be adequate). line_8: - to determine the amplitude and character of fluctuations. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: HASAN fname: HASHIMA category: PI inst: ST SCI addr_1: 3700 SAN MARTIN DRIVE city: BALTIMORE state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA ! lname: HASAN fname: HASHIMA mi: N category: PI inst: ST SCI addr_1: 3700 SAN MARTIN DR city: BATIMORE state: MD zip: 21218 country: USA ! ! end of general_form_address records !
