A galaxy collision model has been line_4: found that appears able to explain both the morphology of the arc and also line_5: possibly the color and brightness. This collision model also fits with the line_6: newly discovered double radio source in this cluster. The model suggests that line_7: the amount of intracluster gas passing through the arc is sufficient to account line_8: for the observed luminosity if a reasonable fraction of it were converted into line_9: high mass stars. One of the goals is to look for any trace of nebulosity along line_10: the edge of the arc that would indicate that such gas is actually being line_11: collected. If the model is verified it would be the first case of propagating line_12: star formation in an intracluster medium. High spatial resolution is needed so line_13: the HST WF/PC would be used. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: STERNER fname: RAY title: P.I. inst: APPLIED PHYSICS LAB (JHU) country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: I propose to image the arc using the WFC positioned line_2: so the arc falls entirely on W2. The baum spot will line_3: be positioned so that it does not fall on the arc. line_4: The orientation of the image is selected to include line_5: the radio source somewhere on one of the 4 PC image line_6: chips. The wide-band visual filter will be used. line_7: The surface brightness measured from the ground is line_8: very low so only a single, long exposure will be made. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: THE SURFACE BRIGHTNESS OF THE ARC IS QUITE LOW. THE ONLY line_2: ESTIMATE AVAILABLE IS 23.6 V MAG/ARCSEC SQ BUT THIS IS line_3: PROBABLY NOT VERY RELIABLE. HOWEVER, USING THIS NUMBER line_4: GIVES A SURFACE BRIGHTNESS OF ABOUT 30 V MAG PER SQ PIXEL line_5: WHICH MAY BE UNDETECTABLE. THE BRIGHTNESS DISTRIBUTION OF line_6: THE ARC IS KNOWN TO BE NON-UNIFORM AND IF IT IS CLUMPY line_7: ENOUGH THEN DETECTION WILL BE NO PROBLEM. UNFORTUNATELY line_8: IT APPEARS TOO FAINT FOR MORE THAN A SINGLE BROAD BAND IMAGE line_9: AND UNLESS IT IS MORE CONCENTRATED THAN CAN BE DETERMINED line_10: NOW IT WILL NEED ALL OF THE AVAILABLE ALLOCATED TIME. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: STERNER fname: RAY title: DR. category: PI inst: APPLIED PHYSICS LAB (JHU) city: LAUREL state: MD country: USA phone: 301-792-5000 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: CL2244-02-ARC descr_1: GALAXY CLUSTER; DISTANT GALAXY CLUSTER; descr_2: INTERACTING GALAXY; GRAVITATIONAL LENS pos_1: PLATE-ID=015P, pos_2: RA = 22H 44M 37.66S +/- 1", pos_3: DEC = -2D 21' 29.0" +/- 1" equinox: 1950 pm_or_par: NO rv_or_z: Z = 0.329 comment_1: FLUX FROM LYNDS, comment_2: PETROSIAN, AP.
