For the last two yers we have been line_4: re-extracting and co-adding spectra of over 200 QSOs and Seyferts whose line_5: sight-lines penetrate the nearby, well-defined voids in the directions of line_6: Coma, Bootes, Perseus-Pisces and Hercules. We propose to observe only our 4 line_7: best candidates. line_8: The purpose of this investigation is to detect hot and/or cold gas line_9: associated with the voids and eventually how they were formed. line_10: At first sight using the low resolution and SNR spectra obtained with IUE line_11: for such a project seems difficult at best. But the UV absorption lines line_12: accessible to IUE (and to HST) are often over a factor of 10 stronger than line_13: their optical counterparts (CaII and NaI) making IUE competitive with large line_14: ground-based reflectors for this purpose (see our examples in the scientific line_15: justification section). ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: STOCKE fname: JOHN title: P.I. inst: COLORADO, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: SHULL fname: J. mi: M. inst: COLORADO, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: CASE fname: J. mi: A. inst: COLORADO, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Updated 4/24/91 (JS/RAL): line_2: High resolution ( 1 Angstrom ) observations of three QSOs line_3: background to cosmic voids are being made with HST to line_4: determine if these voids contain gas in any detectable line_5: form. In order to detect the smallest equivalent width line_6: lines ( or to set the lowest limits on their presence ), line_7: we are observing these bright QSOs at the highest FOS line_8: resolution through the smallest aperture available ( 0.25 x line_9: 2.0 arcsec ).
