RES. PHYS. ! end of coverpage abstract: line_1: The polarized flux spectra of a few Type II Seyfert galaxies line_2: look like the flux spectra of Type I Seyfert nuclei, and the line_3: polarization position angles are perpendicular to the radio line_4: structure axes. This may mean that all type II Seyfert line_5: galaxies have Type I spectra visible only in reflected light. line_6: The broad-line regions can be viewed directly in the cases line_7: where the tori are viewed pole on, and such objects would be line_8: classified as Type I Seyferts. It is crucial to determine line_9: whether this generalization of the polarization results is line_10: correct, and in particular whether all Type II Seyferts have line_11: highly polarized nuclear continua with position angles line_12: perpendicular to the radio source axes. We argue that line_13: contamination by host-galaxy starlight renders this virtually line_14: impossible to determine from the ground for most objects, line_15: while from space the observations would be easy and line_16: straightforward. We can use the FOS on the HST as a line_17: polarimeter, cutting down the starlight by using small line_18: apertures and observing in the UV, where the stellar flux line_19: is weak. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: COHEN fname: ROSS title: P.I. mi: D. inst: CALIFORNIA, UNIVERSITY OF, SAN DIEGO country: USA ! lname: ANTONUCCI fname: ROBERT inst: CALIFORNIA, UNIVERSITY OF, SANTA BARBARA country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Polarimetry of 20 Seyfert 2 nuclei using FOS/RD, the PRISM, line_2: and the B waveplate.
