Recent observations have line_3: revealed a multitude of unusual phenomena at the center, suggesting that the line_4: Galactic center may be a low energy verion of an active galactic nucleus and line_5: may harbor a massive collapsed object. Unambiguous delineation of the central line_6: star cluster, which would provide an important constraint on the central mass line_7: distribution has been hampered by the inadequate angular resolution of line_8: ground-based observations. The HST observations will map directly the line_9: structure of the near-IR source, IRS16, which has been the focus of previous line_10: ground-based observations to define the central star cluster. The resolution line_11: and sensitivity of the proposed observations can also detect and resolve the line_12: individual K and M giant stars of the central star cluster, despite the large line_13: extinction to the center. Understanding the nearest galactic nucleus will be line_14: important for the interpretation of the more energetic active galactic nuclei. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: LO fname: KWOK title: P.I. mi: Y. inst: ILLINOIS, UNIVERSITY OF country: USA ! lname: BIRETTA fname: JOHN title: DR. inst: NRAO country: USA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 5 section: 0 line_1: ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: LO fname: KWOK mi: Y. title: DR. category: PI inst: UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS addr_1: 123 ASTRONOMY BUILDING addr_2: 1002 WEST GREEN STREET city: URBANA state: IL zip: 61801 country: USA ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: GALACTIC-CENTER name_2: IRS16 descr_1: GALAXY; STELLAR CLUSTER; AGN; descr_2: NUCLEUS; GALACTIC NIR OBJECT pos_1: RA = 17H 42M 28.88S +/- 0.07S, pos_2: DEC =-28D 59' 24.8" +/- 1.0" equinox: 1950 comment_1: PROGRAM OBJECT AT RA = 17H 42M comment_2: 29.33S DEC = -28D 59' 18.6" (1950) comment_3: TARGET POSITION PLACES BRIGHT comment_4: STARS OFF DETECTOR fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: I = 22.5 +/- 0.5 fluxnum_2: 2 fluxval_2: TYPE = K0 III fluxnum_3: 3 fluxval_3: A(V) =30 fluxnum_4: 4 fluxval_4: F(9800) = 8 +/-4 E-21 fluxnum_5: 5 fluxval_5: SIZE = 0.3 +/- 0.3 ! ! end of fixed targets !
