We expect that high line_3: resolution optical polarization maps will reveal much structure unresolved from line_4: the ground. These maps will be compared with computer simulations which include line_5: the magnetic field. Radio polarization maps of comparable resolution will be line_6: used to further define the physical state of the jet by providing line_7: depolarization and rotation measure maps. By such means it is hoped to line_8: identify the in situ acceleration mechanism powering the optical emission, and line_9: to set limits on the properties of the surrounding medium. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WRIGHT fname: A. title: DR. mi: E. inst: CSIRO, PARKES country: AUSTRALIA ! lname: THOMSON fname: R. title: P.I. mi: C. inst: INSTITUTE OF ASTRONOMY, CAMBRIDGE country: UK esa: X ! lname: DISNEY fname: M. mi: J. inst: UNIVERSITY OF WALES, CARDIFF country: UK esa: X ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: To map the total intensity and polarization of the optical jet in the quasar line_2: 3C273 using the FOC in imaging mode (512x512 pixels) with filter F430W line_3: (B band). The exposures have been estimated to reveal areas of high line_4: polarization (>5%) in resolution elements 0.1"x0.1" assuming a mean surface line_5: brightness of 21.5 magnitudes per square arcsecond. It is expected that line_6: higher surface brightness features will be found. The observations are to line_7: carried at near zero roll angle with respect to the FOC/96 image aperture (ie, line_8: North at top of frame), or rotated by a multiple of 90 degrees so that the jet line_9: (position angle 223 degrees) falls diagonally across the frame. All line_10: exposures to be taken with the same roll angle. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: THOMSON fname: ROBERT mi: C. title: DR. category: PI inst: INSTITUTE OF ASTRONOMY addr_1: MADINGLEY ROAD city: CAMBRIDGE zip: CB3 0HA country: UK phone: UK+223-337548 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: 3C273-JET descr_1: GALAXY; QUASAR; JET pos_1: RA=12H 29M 05.875S +/- 0.01S, pos_2: DEC=+02D 02' 55.5" +/- 0.2", pos_3: PLATE-ID=00BB equinox: 2000 rv_or_z: Z=0.158 comment_1: POSITION HAS BEEN MEASURED comment_2: USING GASP WITH CCD IMAGE fluxnum_1: 1 fluxval_1: SURF(V)=21.5 +/- 0.5 ! ! end of fixed targets !
