Our goals are to investigate the physical structure of line_3: their accretion disks and investigate the effects of X-ray heating in these line_4: systems. Studies of their UV spectra will lead to; line_5: -constraints on the accretion disk thickness and the effects of X-ray line_6: heating from comparison of the UV and X-ray luminosities, and from the studies line_7: of the UV spectral shape; line_8: -a probe of the sites of UV line emission. Possible locations for the line_9: emission line region are the accretion disk itself and the irradiated line_10: photosphere of the companion star. line_11: Only space-borne instrumentation can study the far UV spectra of these line_12: objects. Most LMXRB are too faint to have been observed with IUE. Only five line_13: have been studied with IUE and only Cen X-4 (in outburst) and Sco X-1 have line_14: yielded data of even moderate signal-to-noise ratio. It is highly desirable to line_15: extend this sample to include LMXRB of various types - bursters, dippers, line_16: accretion disk corona and 'normal' bulge sources - to search for systematic line_17: differences between them. The HST is uniquely suitable for obtaining moderate line_18: resolution UV spectra of these objects. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: WHITE fname: N. title: DR. mi: E. inst: ESA, ESTEC country: NETHERLANDS esa: X ! lname: GOTTWALD fname: M. title: DR. inst: MPE GARCHING country: GERMANY esa: X ! lname: POLLOCK fname: A. title: DR. inst: ESA, ESTEC country: NETHERLANDS esa: X ! lname: HOWARTH fname: I. title: DR. inst: LONDON, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE country: UK esa: X ! lname: KLIS fname: MICHIEL VAN DER title: DR. inst: AMSTERDAM UNIVERSITY country: NETHERLANDS esa: X ! lname: BARR fname: PAUL title: DR. inst: ESA, ESTEC country: NETHERLANDS esa: X ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Our aim is to obtain high-quality UV spectra between 1150A and 3300A line_2: of three low-mass X-ray binaries using the HST FOS.For each target line_3: we propose to perform one exposure in each of the three gratings, line_4: G130H, G190H and G270H, with a resolving power R of 1300. line_5: In the 1150-2000A region we require rather high signal-to-noise ratio line_6: (S/N of 60 per pixel) in order to accurately measure the line_7: equivalent widths of rather weak emission lines such as line_8: e.g. OIV,OV,NIII, CIII ; our requirement longward of 2000A is not so line_9: strict (S/N of 20 per pixel) since we are interested principally line_10: in the UV continuum shape. We propose to observe one X-ray dipper/Accretion line_11: disk Corona(ADC) source, one burster and one 'normal' bulge source. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Only two low mass X-ray binaries have been observed at even moderate line_2: signal-to-noise ratio and another three at very low exposure levels, line_3: with all other LMXRB are too weak to observable with IUE. line_4: Observations at ultraviolet wavelengths are essential both to determine line_5: the bolometric luminosity of the accretion disks in LMXRB, and to study line_6: the resonance lines from highly ionised ions that are diagnostics of line_7: the role of X-ray heating. Thus, observations from space-borne line_8: telescopes are necessary. line_9: These observations can only be performed with the HST due to the dimness line_10: of these systems. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: BARR fname: PAUL title: DR. category: PI inst: SPACE SCIENCE DEPT.
