OF ASTRONONOMY ! end of coverpage abstract: line_1: We propose to obtain high resolution images of galaxies involved in four of the line_2: best studied discordant redshift associations. Even short exposures in one line_3: color with the PC will give critical information on the nature of these line_4: systems. The data could be decisive in establishing whether the discordant line_5: galaxies are projected back-ground objects or are at a distance much closer line_6: than their redshifts would imply. The observations will 1) clarify the line_7: uncertain morphology of the discordant galaxy components and 2) allow a direct line_8: comparison of resolved detail (eg. HII regions, spiral arm width) for objects line_9: with different redshift, within each discordant pair or group. line_11: Large ground based telescopes have already established 1) that the discordant line_12: redshift components in galaxy systems are morphologically peculiar and 2) that line_13: direct signs of physical interaction exist between members of different line_14: redshift within the groups. Statistical studies also suggest that too many such line_15: discordant redshift groups are found. With a very small allotment of HST time, line_16: we have the opportunity to explore the nature of these objects which are line_17: critically important tests of one of the fundamental assumptions in astronomy. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: SULENTIC fname: JACK title: P.I. mi: W. inst: UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA country: USA ! lname: ARP fname: HALTON mi: C. inst: MAX PLANCK INSTITUTE FOR ASTROPHYSICS country: GERMANY ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: The program has two goals: 1) to assess the relationship line_2: of the high redshift component of this group to the line_3: other lower redshift components and 2) to study the line_4: morphology of the four accordant redshift components. line_5: The former involves a search for signs of interaction line_6: between the galaxies and estimates of the respective line_7: distances independant of the redshift. All of this line_8: requires the best resolution possible. We plan to do line_9: considerable experiments with deconvolution techniques line_10: to achieve our goals. Thus we are concentrating on line_11: obtaining the highest S/N possible single band images of the line_12: group. Our individual exposures are limited by the line_13: presence of stars with B=17.2 and 18.1 in the field. line_14: We plan to let the brighter star bleed off to the side line_15: in WF1. There are three stars at 19 or fainter for PSF line_16: determination. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: Schedule SU 01 first and SU 11 last. Schedule SUs 02-10 line_2: in any order. Group exposures 1-11 within 7 days. Use line_3: SAME ORIENT for all subsequent exposures as the first. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: ARP fname: HALTON mi: C. category: CON inst: MAX PLANCK INSTITUT FUR ASTROPHYSIK addr_1: KARL-SCHWARZSCHILD-STRASSE 1 city: D--8046 GARCHING BEI MUNCHEN country: GERMANY phone: 66.14.99 ! lname: SULENTIC fname: JACK mi: W. title: DR. category: PI inst: UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA addr_1: DEPT.
