The observations and reductions form a set of line_4: calibrations which must be performed in order for routine line_5: astrometric observations to be reduced at the milliarcsecond line_6: level. Because the nature of the long and short spatial line_7: frequencies is predicted from pre-launch measurements, but line_8: because the final in-orbit values are not known, a sufficient line_9: number of stars with selected relative positions must be line_10: chosen to adequately cover the distortions expected yet line_11: give a sample of other spatial frequencies which may occur. line_12: The final selection will depend on these factors, and depend line_13: on the availability of stars and on the particular dates that line_14: are scheduled for the observations. The requirement of an line_15: adequate number of stars between 9th and 15th magnitudes, line_16: and consideration of sun-angle roll constraints during the SV line_17: period, has led to the choice of NGC5617 as the observation line_18: field. NGC5617 is at high declination, which makes it line_19: accessable most of the year, regardless of the HST orbital line_20: orientation. However, sun-angle roll constraints limit the line_21: availability of this target to particular times (see #5). ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Acquire guide stars in the FGS units selected for guiding. line_2: With each position and orientation of the FGS, measure from 20-35 line_3: stars (including check stars) in the astrometry FGS with the line_4: yellow filter. The exact number of line_5: stars measured will depend on the date of observation and the line_6: offset used (see below). The stars have been chosen to be line_7: well distributed about the FGS FOV. The offsets described below line_8: will move the stars about the FGS FOV, sampling the distortions line_9: at different positions. Guide stars should be changed as needed. ! question: 3 section: 2 line_1: For Part 1 and Delta-Plan, successively offset target #1 relative line_2: to the center of the FGS FOV, as described below. Here (x,y) means line_3: an offset of x arcseconds in the FGS X direction and y arcseconds in line_4: the FGS Y direction. The offsets for FGS #2 are (0,0), (60,0), (-60,0), line_5: (40,60), (40,-60), (-40,60), (-40,-60), (120,-10), (-120,-10), line_6: (240,-40), (-240,-40), (360,-60),(-360,-60), (360,-120), (-360,-120). line_7: At each of the pointings, measure the stars from the target list that line_8: fall in the FGS FOV. Some stars will leave the FOV at each new line_9: pointing and others will enter it. It is estimated that an average line_10: of 25 stars will be within the FGS FOV at each pointing. line_12: Some pointings, particularly the last 6 in the above list and line_13: especially the last 4, will have fewer than the average number line_14: of stars and can be scheduled during orbits that will have line_15: shorter observational time. The first 7 of the pointings in line_16: the list should be scheduled so that the maximum number of stars line_17: can be measured. ! question: 3 section: 3 line_1: Hughes Danbury Optical Systems, Inc. has suggested that two line_2: additional measurements be made with FGS #2 (Part 1 and Delta, line_3: Plan) as follows: With the FGS centered on target #1, line_4: (e.g., offset=(0,0)), roll the spacecraft about line_5: the center of the astrometry FGS in the amounts of +30 degrees line_6: and -30 degrees, respectively, and measure all the stars that are line_7: within the FGS FOV at these two orientations. Analysis line_8: shows that these two additional observation sets line_9: will substantially improve the accuracy of the Optical Field line_10: Angle Distortion (OFAD) algorithm, and they are essential line_11: to obtaining good distortion coefficients. line_12: This proposal is designed so that these additional measurements line_13: can be made either at nominal roll 30 days before and after line_14: the remaining observations, or at off-nominal roll during line_15: the 60-day window centered on the remaining observations. ! question: 3 section: 4 line_1: For Parts 2 and 3, a similar but shorter sequence of observations is line_2: performed using FGS units #3 and #1 as the astrometry line_3: instrument, to obtain data on these units. This is the "Super- line_4: Mini-OFAD." The offsets are (0,0), (0,60), (0,-60), (60,0), and . line_5: (-60,0). The entire sequence of observations for all 3 FGS units line_6: is given in Parts 1 (FGS 2), 2 (FGS 3) and 3 (FGS 1). line_8: Part 4 contains measurements to link the plate scales in the three line_9: FGS units. It contains no offsets and consists of lines 801-804. line_11: The priority of measurements is: FGS 2 has highest line_12: priority, FGS 3 has next-highest priority, and FGS 1 line_13: has lowest priority. line_15: The Parts 1-4 of the main proposal constitute the line_16: Minimum Plan for the OFAD. The observations on FGS #2 may be line_17: repeated later in SV as provided in the Delta Plan proposal. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: Ground-based limits will be reached in NGC5617 at approximately line_2: the 0.01 arcsec level. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: Off-nominal roll may be required to execute Exposure Logsheet lines line_2: 501-710. Scheduling can eliminate the use of off-nominal roll. line_4: The procedures described in #3 (Exposure Logsheet lines 501-804) are line_5: Minimum Plan. Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 are linked. They are designed so that line_6: the main part of Part 1 can be executed about Apr 15, 1991, Part 2 at line_7: about Dec 25, 1990, and Part 3 at about Dec 25, 1990. Portions of line_8: Part 4 are scheduled near both Dec 25, 1990 and Apr 15, 1991. line_10: The repeat of Part 1 is Delta Plan, and if opted for should be line_11: performed relatively late in SV. The approximate date for the Delta line_12: Plan proposal is Jun 15, 1991. The exposure logsheet lines for the line_13: Delta Plan proposal are lines 901-938. The Delta Plan and Plate Scale line_14: Transfer target lists are different from those for Parts 1-3. line_16: Because of the critical nature of this test and the length of the line_17: observations, special measures should be taken to protect the data line_18: (eg., the data may be written to the onboard tape recorder so that line_19: they can be recovered in case of transmission errors. ! question: 5 section: 2 line_1: The observations in Part 1 and the Delta Plan must be scheduled line_2: between approximately Feb 17, 1991 and Aug 20, 1991, line_3: otherwise sun-angle roll constraints will make the required 30 degree line_4: rolls impossible. If it is necessary to schedule a full OFAD at other line_5: times of the year, a different target must be used. ! question: 5 section: 3 line_1: To reduce the effects of thermal jitter, care in selecting guide stars line_2: is essential. When FGS#2 is the astrometer, the following conditions line_3: should be satisfied: (1) The dominant guide star of each pair should line_4: be in FGS#3, and the roll star in FGS#1. (2) If possible, the dominant line_5: guide star should be chosen as close to FGS#2 as feasable (it is best line_6: if in the half of FGS#3 that is closest to FGS#2.) (3) The secondary line_7: guide star should be chosen so that the line between the two guide line_8: stars is as nearly parallel to the ST V2 axis as possible. line_10: When FGS#3 is the astrometer, the following conditions should be line_11: satisfied: (1) The dominant guide star of each pair should be in line_12: FGS#2, and the roll star in FGS#1. (2) If possible, the dominant line_13: guide star should be chosen as close to FGS#3 as feasable (it is line_14: best if in the half of FGS#2 that is closest to FGS#3.) (3) The line_15: secondary guide star should be chosen so that the line between the line_16: two guide stars is as nearly parallel to the ST V2 axis as possible. line_18: No improvement is possible when FGS#1 is the astrometer. ! question: 5 section: 4 line_1: For some pointings, there may be more stars on the list than can line_2: be measured during one orbit. The order of the stars in the target line_3: list and the arrangement of the observations on the exposure line_4: logsheet have been arranged so that a pointing can be completed line_5: in the following orbit if necessary. It is best, however, to line_6: complete the observations for one pointing in a single orbit line_7: whenever possible. line_9: Part 1 has been designed to be executed on or about Apr 15, 1991, line_10: Part 2 at about Dec 25, 1990, and Part 3 at about Dec 25, 1990. line_11: Lines 801-802 of Part 4 should be executed at about line_12: Dec 25, 1990. Lines 803-804 of Part 4 should be executed line_13: at about Apr 15, 1991. line_15: The Delta Plan proposal is designed for execution on or about line_16: Jun 15, 1991. It may be necessary to resubmit the proposals line_17: and update the target lists should significant schedule slips be line_18: encountered. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: N/A ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Data reduction will be performed using the ADRS within the SDAS line_2: system at STScI with other reductions being performed in Austin. line_3: The data will be put into SDAS Table format for analysis using the line_4: GaussFit module. Initial values of the field distortion parameters line_6: will come from AST-OV-11. The scale value used will also come line_7: from that OV calibration. The initial model will come from the line_8: physical model of the FGS as a start, with the results of line_9: AST-OV-11 folded in for the initial guesses at the parameter line_10: values. Ground calibration of the short wavelength terms will line_11: be examined for consistency with the data. The data will be line_12: insufficient to derive a complete map of the short wavelength line_13: variations. Different polynomial and/or spline approximations line_14: will be tried to determine the most appropriate representation of line_15: the data. Sufficient data should be available to give a good line_16: solution. The covariances and residuals will be examined to line_17: determine a "best fit" solution. The terms, their values, line_18: their errors, and their covariances will be put into the line_19: Project Data Base for Standard Astrometric observations. line_20: This calibration requires the results from AST-OV-03 and line_21: AST-OV-11. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: FGS numbers refer to BAY NUMBERS. The initial calibration of line_3: NGC 188 for the OV Mini-OFAD has been done by line_4: William F. van Altena at Yale using a series of photographic line_5: plates taken during the past 50 years. He used 4-meter line_6: plates to determine modern epoch relative positions and scale. line_7: This work was funded in part by a grant from STScI for line_8: the initial scale and field distortion calibrations. ! question: 8 section: 2 line_1: The results from this procedure, which will be line_2: resident on the Calibration Data Base, will be required for line_3: virtually every HST astrometry observation made with the FGS. line_4: Perkin-Elmer will undertake these observations at the onset of line_5: OV (AST-OV-11). The derivation of the astrometric parameters line_6: from these data for the CDB will be coordinated with line_7: Perkin-Elmer. ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: N/A ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: GaussFit will be available in Austin and at STScI. At least one line_2: Astrometry Team representative, and usually two to three, will line_3: be available at STScI or GSFC during the tests to analyze the line_4: data. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: JEFFERYS fname: WILLIAM mi: H. title: DR. category: PI inst: UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS addr_1: DEPARTMENT OF ASTRONOMY city: AUSTIN state: TX zip: 78712 country: USA phone: (512)471-1455 telex: TEXASTRO !
