abstract:

    line_1:        This test features the measurement of one star, 16 Cyg B = HD 186427, with both
    line_2:        spectrographs, in the range 1530-3230A. The goal of the test is to achieve S/N
    line_3:        = 35 to 50A at 5A resolution. The star is an HST ultraviolet standard, and it
    line_4:        is also a near-solar analog. The purpose of the test is to measure the amount
    line_5:        of red leak into the ultraviolet region for an object with a color that is very
    line_6:        similar to solar system objects. The information is necessary for efficient
    line_7:        planning.

    line_1:        The data from the two spectrographs will be calibrated. For the HRS, the
    line_2:        data will be binned to 5A resolution. The spectra will be plotted on the same
    line_3:        scale. It is expected that the FOS will be systematically high because of the
    line_4:        red leak, with the effect being much worse at shorter wavelengths, particularly
    line_5:        below 2000A.
    line_7:        Previous experience with OAO-2 and IUE data indicates that a
    line_8:        wavelength-independent ("grey") correction may be sufficient to eliminate the
    line_9:        red leak over much of the ultraviolet part of the FOS range. Such an approach
    line_10:       will be tried with HST data first. If more sophisticated corrections are
    line_11:       needed, these data will be used to determine the details. The worst case, that
    line_12:       the data are not correctible, would still contain useful (but discouraging)
    line_13:       information: that the HRS must be used for all ultraviolet spectra of red
    line_14:       objects. This information is absolutely required to plan for planetary and
    line_15:       late-type stellar spectra with the HST.
