Most of the stars in line_3: the fields will be distant giants and A-F dwarfs, but a sizable number are line_4: expected to be very low mass "starlets" within 100 pc, with absolute visual line_5: magnitudes less than ~ 17. Such stars will be very red and targets will be line_6: identified on the basis of V-I color. From the observational data summarized by line_7: Poveda and Allen (1985), there should be two such stars per WFC frame. As the line_8: mass spectrum and luminosity function for such stars is unknown, the parallel line_9: observations will provide important constraints on theories of star formation line_10: and the local mass density. line_12: The angular resolution of the WFC allows a search for extended shells around line_13: late type giants and can be used to constrain mass loss rates from these stars. line_15: We expect to use these data to search for close visual binaries among field line_16: stars.
