The proposed exposures utilize the WFC line_5: in parallel mode when another instrument is prime at high line_6: galactic latitude. Studying these data is a statistical task since the range in line_4: morphology, both then and now, is very large. The parallel program described line_5: here is designed to provide statistical information on a large volume of the line_6: universe, making use of randomly chosen, high latitude fields. From these data, line_7: we plan to obtain counts of galaxies, information on the clustering properties line_8: of distant galaxies, and for those fields in which very long exposures are line_9: obtained, significant morphological information. The results will constrain line_10: theories of the formation and evolution of galaxies and large scale structure. line_11: The survey also has application to star counts and the structure of the halo and line_12: disk in our own Galaxy. It will provide homogeneous information on luminosity line_13: functions to faint levels and can be used to constrain the number of very low line_14: luminosity stars in the solar neighborhood. Short exposures (less than 20 line_15: minutes) in F555W and F785LP with the WFC will be used to measure the line_16: distribution of Galactic stars in magnitude ranges fainter than stars can be line_17: reliably separated from galaxies using ground-based telescopes. HST observations line_18: taken for 5 minutes using the PC (trailed under gyro-control) for the Quasar line_19: SnapShot Survey have shown the importance of obtaining reliable measurements of line_20: the star densities fainter than 19 mag (in V) and have led to a renormalization line_21: of the number density of Galactic spheroid stars. The spheroid main sequence for line_22: Galactic stars is fainter than V=~19 mag. The fields also offer an ideal line_23: selection of first epoch frames for future high latitude proper motion surveys. ! question: 3 section: 1 line_1: A set of sequences is constructed to fit within exposure line_2: opportunities of varying lengths, beginning with single line_3: orbit exposures. On long exposure opportunities, the aim line_4: is to obtain very deep images of galaxies by concentrating line_5: on the F785LP and F555W filters. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: This is a parallel program designed to increase the line_2: scientific productivity of the HST by acquiring data line_3: relevant for studying distant galaxies and the Galactic halo line_4: when the HST is busy but the WFPC is not. ! question: 4 section: 2 line_1: The exposure time is determined by the primary exposure time line_2: and the ability of the planning and scheduling system to line_3: match parallel exposures to primary exposures. Enough line_4: exposures are included to provide good chances for matches. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: There are no special scheduling requests. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: There are no special calibrations. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Data will undergo standard data reduction. Cosmic rays will line_2: be removed and multiple exposures in the same field will be line_3: stacked. The data will be visually inspected in the hopes line_4: of making serendipitous discoveries. Stars and galaxies will line_5: be identified and classified. Galaxy and star counts will be line_6: constructed and galaxy morphologies will be determined. line_7: Results will be applied to the formation and evolution of line_8: galaxies and to the structure of the Galactic halo. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: This proposal is from the entire GTO team. ! question: 9 section: 1 line_1: Yes - this proposal is for the entire GTO team, so many line_2: program numbers are involved. ! question: 9 section: 2 line_1: Structure of the nuclei of galaxies. line_2: Jet structure. line_3: High resolution images show consistency with the unified line_4: model of AGN. line_5: Discovery of a young population of clusters in NGC 1275. line_6: Etc. ! question: 9 section: 3 line_1: Many, but see: line_2: Ap.
