FOS spectroscopy of selected regions will be line_4: obtained later. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: CALDWELL fname: JOHN mi: J. inst: YORK UNIVERSITY country: CANADA ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: Initially, an acquisition image will be obtained, and two visual and two line_2: ultraviolet images will be made of the near stellar environment. One image at line_3: each color will be made with each occulting finger, giving two color line_4: information at essentially all position angles around the star. Later, FOS line_5: spectroscopy of selected areas (based on information in PC im ages from line_6: another program) will be obtained. line_8: Comment continued from CR form: of 4 exposures, which Caldwell will use as line_9: finder charts. Expect current proposal to be executed about 1-2 months after line_10: reference proposal. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: The ability of the HST to observe faint objects very close to bright ones is line_2: one of the most important advantages that the observatory has over ground-based line_3: telescopes. The material around Beta Pictoris is not faint, but it is within a line_4: few arc seconds of a fourth magnitude star. One can study the near-stellar line_5: environment from space, and the near-stellar region may be the most line_6: interesting. Furthermore, imaging from the visible to the ultraviolet, possible line_7: with the HST, spans a range where both ices and minerals are bright (the line_8: visible) to one where ices are bright and minerals are not (the ultraviolet). line_9: Generalized compositional inferences may be possible from the imaging. line_10: Follow-up spectra of selected regions, using the FOS, may be useful for more line_11: detailed compositional work. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: There are no special scheduling requirements or real-time observations. The line_2: only demanding aspect will be to place the central star precisely on the FOC line_3: occulting fingers. There should be a reasonable interval between the imaging line_4: and the spectroscopy, to permit a reasoned selection of which regions to line_5: observe with the FOS. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: There are no special requirements. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: Color differences between the circumstellar material and the star will be line_2: studied for compositional information. If the material appears to be axially line_3: symmetric in orbital characteristics, then any axial variation in brightness line_4: would be studied for phase angle effects. If the material is not axially line_5: symmetric, the brightness variations could not uniquely be regarded as due to line_6: phase angle effects, but the variations themselves might be suggestive of where line_7: to obtain spectra. line_9: The images will be studied closely for evidence of bright regions, where line_10: material may preferentially be condensing into pre-planetary objects. line_12: The spectra will probably contain important signatures of the compositional line_13: characteristics of the circumstellar material. ! question: 8 section: 1 line_1: This star will certainly be observed by many other GTOs, and the observations line_2: should be coordinated as much as possible. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: We expect to have access to a VAX computer in the Dept. of Engineering at Stony line_2: Brook, to supplement the facilities at the STScI. Financial support for line_3: research assistance will come from the GTO contract of Caldwell. ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: Five FOC images, all with Beta Pic on one of the two occulting fingers, line_2: will be obtained: f/288, F220W; f/96, F600M and F342W, both with each finger. line_3: The former is for maximum spatial resolution near the star. The latter 4 are line_4: for gross compositional information. Later, FOS spectra of 6 selected areas of line_5: the circumstellar disk will be obtained. ! !end of general form text general_form_address: lname: CALDWELL fname: JOHN mi: J. title: DR. category: PI inst: YORK UNIVERSITY addr_1: PHYSICS DEPT. addr_2: 4700 KEELE ST. city: NORTH YORK state: ON zip: M3J 1P3 country: CANADA phone: (416) 736-2100 X7721 ! ! end of general_form_address records fixed_targets: targnum: 1 name_1: HD39060 name_2: BETA-PIC descr_1: A5 STAR WITH CIRCUMSTELLAR RING pos_1: RA = 5H 47M 17.1S +/- 0.2S, pos_2: DEC = -51D 3' 59" +/- 2" equinox: 2000 pm_or_par: Y pos_epoch_yr: 2000.00 ra_pm_val: 0.000333 dec_pm_val: 0.0870 an_prlx_val: 0.0610 rv_or_z: V=20 comment_1: THE FOLLOWING OFFSET POSITIONS comment_2: WILL BE DETERMINED FROM PC FINDER comment_3: CHARTS TO BE SUPPLIED BY comment_4: J.
