Two methods will be used:a)the direct observation of water line_3: vapor absorption near 1650-1850 A; b)the observation of the emission of OH line_4: radicals directly produced into the A state after dissociation of their parent line_5: molecule, currently asumed to be H2O. The first method implies either to record line_6: the spectrum of a hot star when it is occulted by the vapor envelope or to line_7: record the spectrum of the sunlight reflected by the dust particles, after it line_8: has been partially absorbed by the atmosphere of the comet. The second method line_9: implies to map the OH* emission near 3080 A: OH radicals directly produced in line_10: the A state have a very different spatial distribution than those which line_11: fluoresce in the solar light. line_12: The detection will be attempted on comet P/Brorsen-Metcalf in July 1989. ! ! end of abstract general_form_proposers: lname: BERTAUX fname: J. mi: L. inst: CNRS, AERONOMY SERVICE country: FRANCE esa: X ! lname: BARBIERI fname: CESARE inst: PADOVA, UNIVERSITY OF country: ITALY esa: X ! lname: ENCRENAZ fname: T. inst: INSTITUTE OF ASTROPHYSICS, PARIS country: FRANCE esa: X ! lname: FESTOU fname: M. mi: C. inst: INSTITUTE OF ASTROPHYSICS, PARIS country: FRANCE esa: X ! ! end of general_form_proposers block general_form_text: question: 3 section: 1 line_1: A specific observation is proposed for Comet P/Brorsen-Metcalf in July 1989 line_2: (exposures in lines 30-32 in cycle 5). line_4: This comet is very active; we expect therefore a high dust production. For this line_5: reason we use both objective-prism and filter exposures. ! question: 4 section: 1 line_1: The ST is necessary: line_3: - to access the UV range line_4: - to have spatial resolution sufficient to detect anisotropies in the H2O line_5: ejection and discriminate between the OH* radicals from the regular OH line_6: radicals that fluoresce under solar excitation. ! question: 5 section: 1 line_1: special scheduling, in order to have both sufficient elongation from the Sun line_2: and proximity to perihelion. line_5: Preferred dates for Comet line_6: Brorsen Metcalf: Jul 22, 1989 +/- 7 days, before perihelion, for this very line_7: active comet. ! question: 6 section: 1 line_1: absolute calibration of the UV filters to measure the H2O production. Dark line_2: time for best sensitivity and photometric accuracy. ! question: 7 section: 1 line_1: It is planned to spend the least amount of time at the STScI; final data line_2: reduction will be carried out at home Institution, where full support is line_3: available. ! question: 10 section: 1 line_1: PI and coworkers have access to all major image processing systems (Vaxes,MIDAS line_2: ,ASTRONET etc.) ! question: 13 section: 1 line_1: It is proposed to detect the presence of water vapour in a periodic comet and line_2: to measure its production. Two methods can be used: a) the observation of line_3: water vapour absorption in the 1650-1850 band; b) the map of the dissociation line_4: product OH* near 3080 A.
